Glendale, AZ – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team hit the road for different matches. The Mustangs first match of the weekend comes against Arizona Christian, where the Firestorm Men's Tennis team would defeat the Mustangs 7-0.

"We had some good energy but just didn't perform the way we wanted to," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "Arizona Christian came out with good energy and sustained it for all three hours and the results showed."

Starting the match off with doubles, the Firestorm defeated the Mustangs in all three matches. Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and partner Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) were defeated 6-2. Doubles No. 2 duo Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) had a tough match, losing 6-1. Mustangs, Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) were just edged out in their match with a 6-4 loss.

In singles, the Mustangs No 1. Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and No. 2 Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) played solid matches, taking their opponents to three sets before falling. Vega went (3-6, 6-1, 3-6) and Romero lost (2-6, 6-2, 2-6). 

"We split sets at No. 1 and No. 2, showing fight and a good effort trying to claw back" said Hunt.

Showing some good fight, Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) battled before losing the point (6-3, 6-3). Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) had good first sets but would go on to lose their matches (6-4, 6-1). Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) would also battle throughout his set before his opponent would take the point (6-4, 6-2).

Both tennis are back on the court tomorrow, playing Colorado Mesa with first serve starting at 4:00pm!
