SILVER CITY, N.M. – Saturday afternoon, at Ben Altamirano Field, the Western New Mexico University's football team was defeated by No. 3 Angelo State 52-13.
Kaleb Gutierrez (El Paso, TX/Franklin HS) led the Mustangs in tackles with 11. David Melendez (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HS) was second with seven. Sam Moala (Reno, NV/Hug HS) had the only sack for WNMU.
The Mustangs quarterback Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) passed for 40 yards, completing 9-20, a touchdown and two interceptions. Paul Amijo Jr. saw some action going 5-7, 89 yards and a touchdown.
David Telles (Los Angeles, CA/Franklin HS) led the team with four catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned one punt for 61 yards. Jamon Chambers (Tacoma, WA/Stadium HS) eight rushes for 25 yards.
Jack Rasmussen (Baltimore, MD/Catonsville HS) had a great day punting the ball with six punts, 305 total yards, averaging 50.8 yards, and two inside the 20. Long Snapper Brayden Starmer (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) recovered a muffed punt as well.
Angelo State got on the board first with a field goal. Next possession the Mustang punted the ball but ASU muffed the ball and the Starmer recovered. Next play, Larsen connects with Telles for a touchdown. The PAT would then be blocked. The Mustangs led 6-3.
ASU marched down the field and scored a touchdown with Zach Bronkhorst completing a 13 yard pass to Noah Massey.
Angelo State had a 4th and 25 but WNMU had a roughing the punter. The Rams capitalized and scored a touchdown off a Kason Philips 17 yard rush.ASU led 17-6.
The Rams went with the big package as defensive tackle Tre-Darius Colbert rushed for two yards to get the score. ASU extended their lead to 24-6
Next Mustangs offensive possession, Grant Patterson (Folsom, CA/Vista de Lago HS) fumbled the ball and Onyei Orupabo ran it to the end zone for 47 yards and made the lead 31-6.
Before the half ended, Telles returned a punt 61 yards and put the Mustangs on the four yard line. Larsen then threw an interception. The Rams made the Mustangs pay, charging down the field on nine plays for 88 yards. Bronkhorst connected with Cason Brown for seven yards. At the half, ASU led 38-6.
In the third quarter Bronkhorst threw his third touchdown of the game, finding Rasheen Green for 16 yards. The Mustangs trailed 45-6.
In the fourth quarter, Amijo Jr. Got his first college snaps in. Armijo Jr. found Telles in the corner of the end zone as the Mustangs cut the lead to 45-13.
Angelo State scored on the next possession. Hagen Garvin threw a 27 yard pass to Thomas Aych for the score.
ASU's quarterback Zach Bronkhorst was 114-21 for 200 yards, and had three touchdowns. 10 different Rams receivers all caught a pass. Four different receivers got a touchdown. On the ground, Nate Omayebu II had 21 carries for 156 yards. Kason Philips had 10 rushes for 73 yards and a touchdown. ASU finished with 294 rushing yards.
October 22nd, the Mustangs will be in Canada, playing against Simon Fraser. Kickoff will be at 7:00pm MDT. The game will also be streamed on the LSC Digital Network.
