Edmond, Okla. – The Mustangs of Western New Mexico University Volleyball completed their third and final game day at the University of Central Oklahoma Tournament hosted in Hamilton Field House, in Edmond, Oklahoma. WNMU came up short in the match against the East Central University Tigers.
"We played very close today even if you look at 0-3," said Head Coach Holly Watts. "We had a lot of energy and saw contributions from the entire travel squad.
The Mustangs played in three nail-biting matches this afternoon but were unable to finish leaving the match at 0-3 against the Tigers.
Senior Bria Augustine lead the team in kills and aces having 8 and 1Senior was a huge asset in the match with 8 kills, 1 ace, and 7 digs. Freshman Kayla Villarreal tied Augustine in kills, 8 for the night, followed by Senior Megan Custer (El Paso, TX/Eastwood High School) with 6 kills, and lead the team with 4 blocks.
Senior setter, Madelynn Culp was the Mustang assist leader having 16 assists and 8 digs. Freshman Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) helped with the Mustang defense earning 10 digs.
Mustangs were close in statistics with East Central in digs, kills, and errors. Set one ended with WNMU 12 kills and ECU with 11, but ECU took set one 25-19. In set two, the Mustangs had four errors with ECU having 5 errors; the set ended in favor of the Tigers ending 26-24 in a close battle. In the final set (three), both teams ended with 6 errors but resulted in the Tigers ending the match-winning 25-21.
"Errors are still getting the best of us so we will be working on those things this week in practice, as we continue to prepare for our conference play to begin next Saturday at UTPB," concluded Watts.
The Mustangs will play the first conference match against the University of Texas-Permian Basin Saturday, September 18 at 1:00 MT.
