Portales, NM – The Mustangs of Western New Mexico University Volleyball were matched up against Eastern New Mexico University and battles their way to their first conference win. "The team put together a complete match," said Head Coach
Holly Watts.
Freshman
Kayla Villarreal (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) lead the offensive in kills tonight with 13 kills and 2 blocks. Veteran
Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School) also had a great offensive night ending with 11 kills and 2 blocks. Freshman Vianey Marrufo Lopez had a great night ending the matchup with 10 kills, 12 digs, and 2 aces.
Freshman
Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) had a great offensive night with a total of 26 assists. Senior veteran
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) also helped the Mustang offense totaling in 21 assists for the night.
Senior
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) lead the Mustang defense with 16 digs followed by Senior
Taliyah Balladares (Santa Fe, NM/Santa Fe High School) with 15 digs.
The Mustangs offensively dominated the match against the Greyhounds with 8 more kills and defensively, the Mustangs had 7 more digs.
"We did make some mistakes, but the team made adjustments to fix them and we improved as the match went on, said Coach Watts.
In four matches, the Mustangs were able to finish the battle for the win. In match one, the Mustangs started out with slow energy and gave up the set 25-21 to the Greyhounds. Throughout the rest of the match, the Mustangs put up a strong fight winning set two in a close match 25-21. Set three and four were also very successful for the Mustangs winning both matches, 25-21 and 25-17.
"Our setters did a nice of finding the hitters that were having success. Our serving was on point in most situations and created problems for ENMU's offense all night, "said Coach Watts. "Nice team victory; on to the next," concluded Watts.
The Mustangs will continue their road play tomorrow, September 25
th, against West Texas A&M at 1:00pm MDT.
