SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western New Mexico University's Head Football Coach
Philip Vigil hired
Brian Dixon as the Mustang's Defensive Lineman Coach.
Â
"I am very excited to bring Coach Dixon, his wife, and his five kids to Silver City. He has proven to find and develop Division I talent every year he was at East LA College," said Vigil. "It is going to be fun and exciting to see what he can do with the defensive line here at WNMU."
Â
"I am very thankful for Coach Vigil and the opportunity to mentor these kids and be a part of the players' and coaches' lives. I'm looking forward to the brotherhood and building a foundation as one," said Dixon.
Â
Dixon was a critical part of the success of East Los Angeles College for the last five years (2015-20). Coaching the defensive line, Dixon instructed his players to succeed, breaking the school record of sacks with 32, 35, and 37, three consecutive years from 2016-18.
Â
During his time with the Huskies, Dixon was recognized as the top recruiter in the CCAAA every year he was at ELAC. In 2016, Dixon and the defensive line played a pivotal role in junior college football history, having the most incredible and most successful turn-a-rounds, defeating College of the Desert in the Patriotic Bowl, claiming the CCAAA Metro Championship.
Â
Throughout his time at East LA, 30+ players would go on to play Division I football. Under his tutelage in the 2019 season, 6 of his defensive lineman went DI, all six players played in a Power 5 conference, and two of which played in the SEC.
Â
Coach Dixon started his football career at Monrovia High School, in his hometown of Monrovia, CA. He would go to Pasadena City College before injuries derailed his playing career. Dixon still had a passion for the game and wanted to share his knowledge and be a part of players' lives, becoming a coach.
Â
Coaching at Monrovia High School as the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Lineman Coach from 2007-15, they would go on to win 8 consecutive league championships. From 2011-13, Monrovia would win the CIF Championship. During his tenure, he would help produce 19 players that would go on to play in the DI level.
Â
While coaching at ELAC, Dixon would earn his bachelor's degree in physical education at California State University-Dominguez Hills. He is married to Carmea and has five kids, Brian Jr., Javon, Mya, Myleaha, and Dyllen. Dixon enjoys his time with his family, fishing, and working on old cars. Drag racing is a big part of Coach Dixon's spare time as he has rebuilt and a 68' Camaro built to race.
