Silver City, NM – Friday afternoon was Senior Day for the
 Western New Mexico University softball team, matching up against UT Permian Basin at Mustang Stadium. The Mustangs split the series losing game one 3-1. A pair of homeruns in game two, including a walk-off grand slam by Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside HS) lifted WNMU over UTPB 8-4.Â

Five senior Lady Mustangs played their last games today: Nikki Medina (El Paso, TX/Montwood HS), Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS), Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS), Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School), and Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside HS).

Game One
Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) pitched a tremendous game one. Hunt pitched a complete game going 7.0 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 9 H, 1 K, 2 BB, and 2 HBP.

The first run to score on Hunt was in the 3rd inning, as Alice Marion reached on an error and later scored on an Aracely Araiza single to center field.

Entering the bottom of the 5th inning, Mustangs hitter, Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) doubled off the left-field fence scoring Cecilia Jurado (El Monte, California/South El Monte High school). The game would be tied until the 7th inning.

In the 7th inning, the Falcons would put the game just out of reach with a Kortlyn Brown single, bringing in two runners. The Mustangs had an opportunity to do damage in the bottom of the 7th inning having the bases loaded with just one out. WNMU couldn't score, as UTPB would take game one 3-1.

UTPB's Araiza went 3-for-4, scoring a run and an RBI. Brown was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and April Arellano went 2-for-2 and a walk. UTPB ended game one with 9 hits.

Marissa Salinas started game one for the Falcons, as she would get the win, moving on to (2-2) on the year. Salinas's final line goes 6.1 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 H, 5 K, and 3 BB. Abby Cousins would get her second save of the year, pitching 0.2 IP, 0 R, and a BB.

Game Two
The Mustangs and Falcons went into extra innings after Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) tied the game with a two-run homerun in the 7th inning. Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside HS) would end it in the bottom of the 8th inning, blasting a walk-off grand slam to end her softball career. The Mustangs would split the series after the 8-4 win.

"I can't express enough pf how happy I am for G! What a way to go out on her senior campaign. We love her and will miss her," said Head Coach Elsa Cocker.

WNMU got their offense going, having 13 hits in game two. Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) led all WNMU hitters going 4-for-4. Paredes-Alvarez had three hits, Jurado had two hits, and Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS) also had two hits.

Munoz got the start in game two. She would last 3.1 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 5 BB, and 1 HBP. Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) would come in a get the win for the Mustangs, pitching 4.2 IP, 1 ER, and 5 H.

The Falcons got out to the early lead scoring a run in the 2nd inning, off a Val Gonzalez sacrifice fly. In the 3rd inning, Araiza doubled, scoring a run and she would later score on a wild pitch.

WNMU would continue to fight back, scoring a run off a Jurado single, bringing in Garcia.
Down to their last out, Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) blasted a two-run homerun to tie the game and push it into extra innings.

"Bry had a clutch homerun and gave us a chance to win. We kept passing the stick, putting us in a good position to do damage" said Cocker.

In the 8th inning, Santellanes gave up her only run with a solo homerun to Choco Munoz.

UTPB's closer, Abby Cousins was in the game and hit a batter, and gave up a single. Camacho would come back into the game, hit a batter, get a line out, and give up a base hit before Paredes-Alvarez stepped up to the plate. Seeing the pitch well, Paredes-Alvares hit a high shot to left field, clearing the fence for a walk-off grand slam.Â

The Mustangs would split the series after winning game two 8-4.

Sierra Camacho started the game pitching the first four innings not allowing a run, striking out three, and walking one. Becky Berth would come in and pitch an inning. Abby Cousins came in in the 6th inning pitching 2.0+ innings, where she would blow the save in the 7th inning and the lead in the 8th inning. Cousins' final stat line goes 2.0+ IP, 5 ER, 7 H, and an HBP. After Cousins gave up the lead, Camacho would come back in where she would face four batters and give up the walk-off grand slam.
