Box Score 4 Silver City, NM – Saturday, The Western New Mexico University tennis teams headed to Wichita Falls, TX, playing two matches. The Mustangs went up against LSC opponent Midwestern State first, defeating the Mustangs men and women 6-1. WNMU also played a non-conference match against Southeastern Oklahoma University beating both Mustang teams 7-0.Â
Match one vs Midwestern State
The Mustangs had a much better day today as Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) earned the doubles win over ranked Angel Palacios and Ben Westwick, 6-2. Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) and Erik Dallman continued from their success yesterday, winning their doubles match 6-3.
"The men took a doubles point from MSU, who happens to be one of the top doubles teams in the country" said Head Coach Alex Hunt.
In singles, the Mustangs were pushed hard. Vega, Mere, and Lazius Brown (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) all were defeated 6-2, taking the match 6-1.
The women had a tough time against the Mustangs of MSU. Both of WNMU.'s doubles pairs lost 6-2. Julia Tozzi (Limeira, Brazil/) was the only Mustang to get a singles to win. Tozzi went up against Casie Curry, winning the first set 6-4 before Curry rallied back winning the second set 6-3. Tozzi continued to fight winning the third set and the match, 10-7.
Match two vs Southeastern Oklahoma State
Vega and Delpino continued to play with high energy as they defeated ranked Southeastern Oklahoma's Marin Jukovic and George Botha 6-3. Jace Crawford (Lovington, NM/Lovington HS) and Lazius Brown (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) fell in a tough match 6-4.
Delpino and Mere played very well in their singles matches. Delpino played with good energy before falling 6-4 and 6-3. Mere lost some tough ones as he lost 7-5 and 6-4.Â
For the women, Tozzi and Gedlitschka lost their doubles match 6-3. Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) and Nicold Gonzales fell 6-4.
Gedlitschka matched up against Vanessa Nitu. Gedlitschka took the first set 6-3, but Nitu battled back winning the next two sets 6-1 and 10-8. Paredes was just edged out of a loss, losing both sets 7-6(8) and 7-5.
"Our energy was great this afternoon despite it being our fourth match in 2 days" concluded Hunt.
WNMU will have a two-match homestand on April 10th, playing against LSC foes UT Permian Basin at 9:00am MT and UT Tyler at 2:00pm MT.
