Canyon, TX – Sunday afternoon, the Western New Mexico University softball team played against West Texas at beautiful Schaeffer Park. WNMU couldn't get their offense rolling, having just 4 hits on the day. The Lady Buffs would go on to win the doubleheader 13-3 and 8-0.
Game One
Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) got her first homerun of the year, blasting it over the left-field wall in the 2nd inning. The Mustangs would have just 3 hits in game one.
West Texas scored early and often in game one. Mustangs starting pitcher, Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) last only 3.1 innings after giving up all 13 Lady Buff runs. Hunt's final line goes 3.1 IP, 13 ER, 12 H, and 3 BB. Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) would finish the game pitching 0.2 IP, 1 H, and 1 K.
Entering the top of the 5th inning, WNMU was down 13-1. The Mustangs continued to battle putting up two more runs. Cecilia Jurado (El Monte, California/South El Monte High school) pinch-hit and delivered an RBI single. Next batter, Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS) out the ball in play, forcing an error and scoring Jurado. The Mustangs wouldn't cash in anything else.Â
WT had 13 hits and 8 of those hits were extra-base hits. From the 8 extra-base hits, 8 runs crossed the plate.
Ruby Salzman from WT 3-for-3 with a homerun in the 3rd inning. Salzman would end the game with three runs scored and two RBI's. Madison Johnson would also hit a three-run homerun in the 3rd inning. She would finish the game with 4 RBI's. Julie Guzman came into the game in the 4th inning delivering a clutch triple to bring in two Lady Buff runners.
Kyra Lair started game one as she would get the win, moving on to (16-5) on the year. Lair's final line goes 4.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, and 9 K. Halle Lytal pitched 1.0 IP, 2 R (1 ER), and a BB.

Game Two
The Lady Buff pitching kept the Mustangs offense in check, allowing just one hit in game two.
Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) stepped in the circle, getting the start for the Mustangs in game two. Munoz would pitch 6.0 IP, 8 R (6 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, and an HBP.Â
Munoz would have the only hit of the game, coming in the 2nd inning. WT pitchers would retire the next 12 WNMU batters to win the game.
WT would put the ball in play forcing the Mustangs to make a play to get their first two runs of the game. Johnson would come up and triple a run in. The following batter, Sydney Greeson would hit a sacrifice fly to put up the Lady Buffs 4-0.
In the 3rd inning, Maddie Geidel came up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam, putting the game out of reach for the Mustangs.
WT would use three pitchers to get the win. Emilee Wilson got the win as she is now (10-5) on the season. Wilson pitched 4.0 IP, 0 R, 1 H, and 4 K. Josey Nichols pitched 0.2 IP and Sydney Greeson pitched 0.1 IP.
Next Friday is Senior Day for the Mustangs, as they conclude the 2021 season. WNMU will play against UTPB with the first game starting at 12pm MT and game two at 2pm.
