Box Score Silver City, NM – Friday, the Western New Mexico University tennis teams played against the Lions of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Both the men and women's team's had opportunities to clinch but the match slipped away as both Lions teams would win 4-3.
In doubles, Jonathon Vega and
Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) took care of business winning 6-1.
Lazius Brown (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) and
Jace Crawford (Lovington, NM/Lovington HS) had a great match but were defeated 6-4.
Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) and Erik Dallman didn't have their best stuff and would fall 6-4 as well.
Vega, Mere, and Dallman all beat their opponets, but it wasn't enough for the Mustangs to get a win. Vega had a stunning agianst Wain Van Dyk of the Lions. Going the distance in set one, Vega defeated Van Dyk 7-6(4) and would then carry his momentum to secure the match in set two, winning 6-2.
Mere battled all match after losing the first set 6-4. Not giving up, Mere would win set two 6-2 and force a tie-breaker. Defeating his opponent 1-0(5), Mere took the match, giving the Mustangs their second point. Dallman bounced back in his singles match, defeating his opponent in straight sets 6-2 and 6-3.
The women played well but little mistakes end up costly them in the 4-3 lost to the Lions. Like the men, the # 1's for women's duos took care of business. Julia Tozzi and Camila Gomez won 6-4. The Mustangs two's and three's had a tough time being defeated 6-1 and 6-3.
Three Mustangs were get a win but it wasn't enough. Camila Gomez got the Mustangs on the board first, defeating her opponent 6-4 and 6-2. Kasja Gedlitschka didn't back away from her opponent. Gedlitschka took the first set 6-1 but would fall in the second set 6-2. Facing off with her foe from UAFS in the third set, Gedlitschka wasn't fazed and won 6-2. Nicold Gonzalez had a great match winning both of her sets 6-4.
Tozzi and Julia Terrazas both took their opponent to the third set but couldn't secure the win. Tozzi lost the first set 6-1, won the secpnd set 6-0, and was edged out in the third set 6-3. Terrazas had an intense match after the first set slipped away 6-4. Terrazas would pick up her pace and win 6-3 before being defeated in the third set 6-2.
The Mustangs will play their last regular season matchup tomorrow morning at 10:00am against Cameron University.
