Dallas Schools get the Best of Mustangs

Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University tennis team played two matches Friday, one conference matchup and one non-conference match. The Mustangs first match was against LSC foe Dallas Baptist, in Arlington, TX, where the men would lose 6-1 and the women fell 7-0. Against UT Dallas, the men fell 6-3 and the women also would follow suit losing 7-1.

Match one vs DBU

Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) had a solid first match out on the courts. Mere secured the only point for the Mustangs after winning his singles matchup 6-0 and 7-6(5). In doubles Mere paired up with Erik Dallman as they won the match 6-2.

Jonathon Vega and Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) battled but were just edged out in doubles, losing 7-5. 

In singles, Vega was on number one as he was defeated 6-4 and 6-3. Delpino played well, as he lost 7-5 and 6-2. DBU would go on the win the match 6-1

The women had a tough time against the Patriots. Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) matched up against Ira Vogelman, as Vogelmann took the match, winning both sets 6-3. DBU would go on to win the match 7-0. 

Julia Tozzi (Limeira, Brazil/) and Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) paired up for the first time this year. They battled before the Patriots won the match 6-3. DBU

Match two vs UT Dallas

In duos, the Mustang men played very well, winning two of the three matches. Vega and Delpino won their match 8-4. Jace Crawford (Lovington, NM/Lovington HS) and Lazius Brown (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) played an exceptionally well match before being nudged out 8-6. Mere and Dallman played a back-and-forth match before talking the win 8-7(5).

Mere stayed undefeated throughout the day, as he won his singles match 7-5, 4-6, 10-4. Delpino had a chance to win his singles match after winning his first set 7-5, however, the Comets, John Edwards, battled back winning the next two sets 6-3 and 10-6.

For the women, Gedlitschka was the sole Mustang to get a win, as she won 6-3, 2-6, and 10-8. Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) played very well, losing her first set 6-7(5), winning the second set 7-5, and fell in the last set 11-9. Tozzi Won her first set 6-3 but last the next two 6-1 and 10-4.

Tozzi and Gedlitschka were the only Mustang duo to play against UT Dallas, as they were defeated 8-3.

The Mustangs play two tomorrow, April 3rd Midwestern State, followed by a non-conference match against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
