Box Score 3 Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University tennis team played three matches in two days starting Friday afternoon. The Mustangs men's and women's teams would get two wins each against Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University, as LSC foe St. Mary's University (TX), would give the Mustangs their only loss on the weekend.
Match One vs St. Mary's
To start Friday's matches, rain forced a four delay before the Mustangs were able to get on the courts. The Rattlers would go on to defeat the Mustang men 7-0 and the women 6-1.
Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) would go up against Jeremiah Sanchez, as Sanchez would go on to win 6-4 and 6-3. Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) played well but fell 6-4 and 6-4.
Erik Dallman and Mere paired up in doubles, playing the best for the Mustangs before being defeated 6-3.
The women had a hard time against the Rattlers as well. Nicold Gonzales was the only Mustang to get a win, defeating Alice Thane in the sets; 3-6, 6-3, and 10-6. Julia Tozzi had a chance to win her match after losing the first set 6-0. Tozzi would back winning the next set 6-3 before falling in the third set 7-5.
In doubles, the Mustangs couldn't get anything going, allowing the Rattlers to get the point heading into singles play.
Match Two vs Schreiner University
WNMU's tennis teams bounced back after match one. The men would go 6-1 and the women would sweep the match win 7-0.
In doubles, Vega and Delpino lost a nail biter 7-8(3), however, the Mustangs' other two duos did not disappoint. Mere and Dallman just edged out their opponents 8-7(5) and Jace Crawford (Lovington, NM/Lovington HS) and Lazius Brown (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) would win their match 8-4.Â
In singles, Delpino continued to play well, winning his match 7-5 and 7-6(5). Mere and Dallman played very well. Mere would outplay his opponent 6-3 and 6-1, as Dallman would win his match 6-1 and 6-3.
The women's doubles play was exceptional, winning all three matches. Camila Gomez and Tozzi would win their match 8-0. Similarly, Kajsa Gedlitschka and Nicold Gonzales would do the same. Massiel Paredes and Julia Terrazas would win 8-5.
In singles, Tozzi carried over her great play from doubles, winning 6-4 and 6-2. Gomez did much of the same winning 6-1 and 6-2. Gedlitschka dominated the court, not allowing her opponent to score, winning 6-0 in consecutive sets. Terrazas would come out on top in her match, winning both her sets 6-2.
Match Three vs Texas Lutheran University
Saturday morning the Mustangs would travel to Seguin, TX, to play Texas Lutheran University. The Mustangs would get two wins out with the men winning 8-1 and the women 9-0.Â
In doubles, the Bulldogs' number one team played very well against Vega and Delpino. The Mustangs duos would come out top 8-5. The Mustangs other two duos would win 8-0.
Vega's singles play continued to shine, winning 6-0 and 6-2. Mere would win his match, winning 6-0 in both sets. Dallman had a touch much, just edging out his opponent 6-4 and 6-4. Crawford and Brown would win both of their matches as well. Crawford's match was 6-1 and 6-1 and Browns was 6-3 and 6-0.
The women's play was much of the same. In doubles, Tozzi and Gomes took the match 8-1. Paredes and Terrazas defeated the Bulldogs 8-2, and Gedlitschka and Gonzales won 8-0.
Tozzi, Gedlitschka, Terrazas, and Paredes would defeat their opponents 6-0 in consecutive sets. Gomez won her match 6-1 and 6-0, and Gonzales would win her match 6-0 and 6-1. Â
The Mustangs be back in Silver City next week. The women will play three LSC matches starting Thursday, April 22nd, against Teas A&M-Kingsville. Friday, April 23rd, both teams will play against Arkansas-Fort Smith, and on April 24th, they will face Cameron University.Â
