AZUSA, CALIF. – The Western New Mexico University tennis teams concluded their fourth match in three days in Southern California, playing against Azusa Pacific University. APU's men's team is ranked #9 and the women #11 defeated the Mustangs 4-0, Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Mustangs struggled against the nationally-ranked Cougars losing three matches. Three matches weren't finished as Camila Gomez's (Bogota, Colombia) was one of them. Gomes a strong start to her match, as she won her set 6-4 against #8 nationally ranked Anna Savenchenko. In the middle of her second match, it was called due to the match being clinched.Â
The Mustangs' doubles play was similar to the individual play as WNMU all three matches 6-1.
For the men, #9 APU caused the Mustangs trouble. Both Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) left the match labeled as retired. Vega lost his first match 6-3. Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) was battling it out before being defeated for his first set 6-2. His match was not finished due to the match being clinched.
Mere and Erik Dallman had a tightly contested first set in doubles, as it was left 6-5 and not finished due to the match being clinched. Vega and Delpino battled against the Cougars' Jakob Schnaitter and Leyton Bohren, losing 6-3.
The men's team will be off until April 2nd, playing their first conference match against Dallas Baptist in Arlington, TX, followed by a match against UT Dallas in Richardson, TX. April 3rd will be their second LSC match against Midwestern State, followed by a non-conference match against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
The Lady Mustangs will be on the courts next weekend, March 26th, playing their first LSC match in Silver City, NM, against Angelo State.
