Box Score 2 SURPRISE, Ariz. – Western New Mexico University's Men's and Women's Tennis Teams conclude their third match in two days, falling to Colorado Mesa University.
"The men's team pushed themselves physically against some tough competition today. Each guy fought until the end with the attitude we've been preaching the past several week," said Head Coach
Alex Hunt.
Freshman
Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) earned the only victory for the men as the Mavericks defeated the Mustangs 6-1. Vega battled in all of set just nudging out CMU's Christian Albrechtsen 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 1-0 (10-2).
"The women's team fought hard. We just let the doubles point and a couple singles matches get away from us in an uncharacteristic fashion" said Hunt.
Julia Tozzi (Limeira, Brazil/) and Camilia Gomez won both of their sets and later paired up in duos, winning 6-2. Tozzi won her sets (6-1, 6-4) and Gomez dominated winning both sets 6-1.
Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) defeated her opponent as well (6-3, 6-2). The Mavericks would go on to win the match 4-3.
Coach Hunt is seeing the development saying, "Despite the disappointing outcome today, the Lady Mustangs had a great weekend with several impressive wins! Coach Weinkam and I are excited to keep pushing these ladies to their max. The results are showing and it's validating to watch."
"Although the match didn't end in our favor, Coach Weinkam and I are still pumped to see what this team can accomplish down the road" concludes Hunt.
The men will look to get their first win next weekend (2/20) as they take on Seward County Community College. The women are now 2-1 on the year and will play a doubleheader next Saturday (2/20), playing against Seward County Community College and the Air Force Academy.
