Denton, TX – The Western New Mexico University Volleyball team served up against the Texas Women's Pioneers on Saturday afternoon in the Kitty Magee Arena. In a tough three sets, the Pioneers made their way to defeated the Mustangs.
Senior Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School) had an unstoppable right arm today to lead the team with 10 kills on 16 attempts giving her a .563 hitting percentage. Senior Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) added on 7 kills for the team and lead the defense with 12 digs. Freshman Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) tallied 13 assist for the afternoon while Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) had 11 assists following.
The Mustang blocking boded well for the team for a total of 10 in the three sets. Madison Gardner (Oak Hills, CA/Oak Hills HS) lead the team with three assisted blocks giving two to each Marlaynah McDonald (Silver City, N.M./Silver High School) and Kayla Villarreal (El Paso, TX/Americas HS).
At the beginning of set one, Pioneers came out on a 3-0 run. The Mustangs quickly recuperated to tie the game 7-7. The Pioneers took set one 25-17 after a few costly Mustang errors.
In set two, WNMU had a three point lead, 5-2 owed to three back to back kills. TWC was not going to let the set go by so quickly and tied the game 11-11. Both teams fought to hold their lead back and forth, but ended in TWC taking possession of the game, 25-22.
Within the final set, the Mustang errors would prove to be the deciding factor for the match ending the game, 25-17 TWC ending the match.
The Western New Mexico Mustangs will be back at home to play against University of Texas at Tyler and Texas A&M University-Commerce on November 11th (6:00PM MT) and November 13th (12:00PM MT) for the last two games to wrap up the season.
