Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Volleyball team hosted a match-up against the University of Texas at Tyler Patriots Thursday evening at Drag's Court. After three merciless sets, the Mustangs fell just short to the Patriots in three sets.
Veteran Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) found zone three and dominated the Patriot's defense totaling 18 kills with a .350 hitting percentage. Senior Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School) ending the night with 5 kills against the Patriot's large block. Senior co-captain, Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) was successfully able to find the hitter's hands and ended with 17 assists. Co-Captain Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School), was right behind totaling 16 assist at the end of the match.
The Mustangs defended the ball well back row as Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) and freshman Eliana Moultrie (El Paso, TX/Canutillo HS) each had 9 digs on the night.
Mustangs held a two-point lead in the middle of set one, 17-15 but a few costly hitting errors would give the Patriots the win 25-20.
In set two, the Patriots outscored the Mustangs in kills for most of the set. After digging a large hole for themselves, the Mustangs regrouped on point 12-24 and went on a five point lead to make the score 17-24. Unfortunately, the effort by the Mustangs was not enough and the Patriots took set two, 25-17.
Set three was full of grit, aggressiveness, and passion from each side of the court. The score was tied for a total of 11 times in set three as the Mustangs refused to hand the Patriots the win without going down with a fight. The Mustangs held a two-point lead on seven different occasions throughout the set. After a heart racing, invigorating final set, the Patriots defeated the Mustangs 27-25.
The Western New Mexico Mustangs will finish their season at Drag's Court against Texas A&M University-Commerce on November 13th (12:00PM MT) as well as honor their seniors who will be graduating this spring.
