Silver City, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University Volleyball team played a three-set game at their home court, Drag's Court, against LSC competitor, St. Edward's University. The Hilltoppers came to compete on the court defeating the Mustangs 3-0.
Senior veteran
Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School), played well for the Mustang offensive earning herself 7 kills. Other senior,
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) ended the match with 5 kills followed by
Megan Custer (El Paso, TX/Eastwood High School) with 3 kills.
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) led the offense in assists totally up 13 for the match. Freshman
Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) stayed close behind her ending with 9 assists and 1 ace.
For the Mustang defense, dig leader
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) scrambled around the court to ensure the ball did not hit the floor.
Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) and
Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) tied in the second most digs for the team, each earning 6 digs.
In sets one and two the Mustangs started off slow and found themselves in a hole too large to get themselves out of ending set one at 25-15 and set two 25-14. WNMU offense was having a difficult time finding the end lines in the first two sets costing the Mustangs costly errors. In set three, WNMU entered the court energetic and ready to compete, but the Hilltoppers were able to defeat them to end the match 3-0 with the final score of 25-20.
WNMU Mustangs will departure Silver City, to play against the University of Arkansas Fort Smith in Fort Smith, AR. The game will be on Friday, October 8
th with the first serve at 5:00pm MDT.
