Football is Defeated By the Lions

Commerce, TX – Western New Mexico University Football was a shutout 58-0, playing against Texas A&M-Commerce at Memorial Stadium, in Commerce, TX.

The Mustangs couldn't get the offense going having just 13 first downs and 157 total offense. The Rams offense had 22 first downs and 527total yards of offense. The Lion defense sacked the quarterback 10 times and 14 tackles for loss.

The Mustangs ground game had 54 yards. James Hoban (Parker, AZ/Parker HS) rushed for 42 yards on 8 attempts. Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) and the passing game couldn't get much going either. Larsen threw for 80 yards on 19 attempts and would also throw an interception.

The Mustangs leading receiver was Allen Ortiz (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain HS), who had three catches for 45 yards. Bryce Coleman (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View HS) also had four catches for 26 years

On the defensive side of the ball, Denaylan Fuimaono (Long Beach, CA/Carson HS) had 9 tackles including 7 solo. Cauy Oropeza (El Paso, TX/Del Valle HS) had an interception in the third quarter.

Commerce's game plan was to rush the ball and they did just that. Crandale Hale ran for 102 yards on 13 attempts. J.T. Smith rushed 9 times for 89 yards and had a TD.  

The Lions QB, Miklo Smalls went 8-10 on 224 yards and threw for two touchdowns and an interception. The Lions put in second string QB Jaiave Magalei Garvin found the end zone on both of his attempts. 

WNMU will head home facing Texas A&M-Kingsville for Staff/Faculty Day, on October 23rd, for a 12:00pm kick off!
