Silver City, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University Football team went head-to-head against Texas A&M-Kingsville at Ben Altamirano Field, Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs found themselves battling late in the fourth quarter before falling 28-19. Â
Starting the game for the Mustangs was Brandon Ziarno (Melbourne, FL/Melbourne Central Catholic HS). Early in the first quarter Ziarno would leave the game due to injury, and Freshman Calahan Carter (Broomfield, CO/Holy Family HS) would enter the game.
WNMU rushed the ball 44 times, 26 of them came from Bryce Coleman (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View HS), who finished the day with 57 yards. Oly Ta'ase (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Fagaitua HS) rushed 9 times for 16 yards and Carter rushed 6 times for 23 yards.
Carter got thrown into the fire and held his own. Passing the ball 17-34, he ended the game with 203 passing yards, a passing touchdown, and a rushing touchdown.
Josh Powell had the hot hands for the Mustangs, bringing in 6 catches for 91 yards. Jacob Wallace (Marion, TX/Marion HS) had the lone receiving touchdown, while catching three balls for 22 yards.Â
Isaiah Webb (Tucson, AZ/Cienega HS) led the defense in tackles with 5. He would also sack the quarterback once. Jeremiah Tyler (Detroit, MI/Chandler HS) had 1.5 sacks as well.
Coleman got the Mustangs on the board, rushing right up the cut for a yard, just before the half ended.Â
After a strong drive in the middle of the fourth quarter, Carter found Wallace in the corner of the endzone, cutting the lead to 28-13. The extra point would be blocked.Â
The final Mustang score came as time ran out, Carter powered his way into the end zone for a one yard rush, ending the game 28-19.
The Mustangs were trailing all game. The Javelinas scored three touchdowns in the first half. Zadock Dinklemann got the start for TAMUK ending the day 14-24 with 207 yards and a touchdown.
Christian Anderson pounded the rock all game long. Anderson had 16 rushes for 53 yards and a touchdown. Backup QB Jacob Cavazos had one rush, where he would find pay dirt, and Amonte Bowen had three rushes with one finding the end zone.Â
WNMU heads to Wichita Falls, TX, next weekend, playing against Midwestern State for the final LSC game of the year. Kickoff is at 6:00pm MT at the beautiful Memorial Stadium. The Mustangs next home game is November 6th, playing against Central Washington for a Noon kickoff.
