Weinkam to be Next Tennis Graduate Assistant

Silver City, NM - Head Tennis Coach Alex Hunt has announced the hiring of Griffin Weinkam. Weinkam will serve as the Tennis programs Graduate Assistant, studying to get his MBA.

Weinkam played four years (2015-2019) at Hardin-Simmons University and was Coach Hunt's teammate for four years. "Griffin is an extremely talented player and a fantastic tennis mind," said Hunt. "He knows what it takes to succeed at a high level, both on and off the court, and that is certainly what I'm looking for from my assistant, to help push this program forward."

Former Mustang tennis star and Graduate Assistant, Annely Heinze, recently graduated with her Masters, opening up the Graduate Assistant role for Weinkam.

"Annely was the backbone for tennis programs while she was here," Hunt explains. "She built a relationship with each player, kept them motivated, and reiterated team goals."

Weinkam and Hunt were teammates in college, however, their tennis connection began 12 years ago. Hunt explains, "12 years ago we played on a court next to each other at a USTA Texas Super-champs tournament at the ages of 12 years old." Weinkam would later be named a USTA Texas Superchamp Level Player.

The Frisco, Texas, native was destined to perform at a high level, starting in high school at Frisco Centennial, Weinkam earned four consecutive All-District awards in both singles and doubles. After receiving a scholarship at Hardin-Simmons University, Weinkam went on to earn four consecutive Academic All-ASC and was a two-time recipient of the ASC Player of the Week winner.

With a career high, 11.2 Universal Tennis Rating in singles, in 2016, Weinkam was second team All-Conference singles and in 2019, earned first team All-Conference singles. Weinkam also had a career high, 11.4 Universal Tennis Rating in doubles, earning first team All-Conference doubles in 2018 and second team All-Conference doubles in 2017 and 2019.

"I'm super excited to get started on this journey with this great guy. Fantastic things are ahead for WNMU Tennis with Griffin helping lead the charge" explains Hunt.

Both the Men and Women Tennis Teams will open up their season January 30th, playing a double-header against McMurry and Hardin-Simmons, in Midland, TX.
