Mustangs Split on Day 2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, UT – After a tough start to the Dixie State Courtyard Classic, the WNMU Softball team bounced back on Day 2 splitting their games, but snapping their skid.

Game 1 vs. CONCORDIA UNIV. (ORE.)
After a tough loss to MSU Billings the day before, the Mustangs had short time to recover before taking on Concordia Univ. (Ore.) to start day two of the tournament. Errors continued to haunt the Mustangs defensive output, as they gave up two runs early on to the Cavaliers.
With two outs and a runner on, back-to-back fielding errors by Concordia allowed WNMU to get on the board. Although they were able to find open spots throughout the field, the Concordia defense made it difficult to score leaving WNMU runners stranded.
The Cavaliers put together two more runs in the sixth, before adding another four in the seventh to capture the 8-1 victory.
Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) and Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School ) each tallied a pair of hits in the loss, with the lone run being scored by Habitzreuther.

Game 2 vs. FORT LEWIS
Immediately following the loss to MSUB, the Mustangs dusted themselves off and found success against the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis to close out Day 2 on a high note.
Aliehs Ortiz (Rio Rancho, NM/V. Sue Cleveland HS) started things off with an infield single, then executed stealing to second to give the Mustangs some early spark. This time around, it was WNMU who capitalized on an error scoring in their half of the first inning.
In an attempt to reach second, Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS ) was thrown out but not before Grisdey Paredes Alvarez to put WNMU up by two. A trio of runs from the Skyhawks forced a pitching change for the Mustangs, scoring five in total in the bottom of the second to takeover.
The response? A single for Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) and a successful stolen base, put WNMU in a familiar scoring position. In need of a pitching change after three walks in the last four batters, FLC exchanged their starter who then walked the following batter giving the Mustangs a chance to tie. Grisdey Paredes – Alvarez stepped up to the plate, putting up a sacrifice fly to score the tying run in the third.
With the bases loaded, Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School ) crushed a shot to left center, getting all the way to second base enough to score the go ahead runs early in the fourth.
For the rest of the game, Jalyn McClain (El Centro, CA/Central Union HS ) allowed her team to secure the win putting pressure in the circle. The senior struck out three, allowing just one run on five hits for her third win of the season.
