Mustangs Fall in Courtyard Classic Opener

ST. GEORGE, UT – On their first road trip of the preseason, the Mustang softball team traveled up north to St. George, Utah for the 2020 Dixie State Courtyard Classic. Playing five games over a span of three days, WNMU opened play Thursday with a mid-morning match up with the Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur, before closing out day one against the Yellowjackets of Montana State – Billings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME 1 vs. NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR
After a quiet first inning, the Argonauts scored off a Mustang error to take the first run of the game. For the remainder of the game Western played tight defense but were held to just a single hit in the fourth and fifth innings, leaving runners stranded.

In the top of the seventh, another Mustang error allowed a NDNU runner to get on. Designated hitter for a reason, Melissa Garcia sent a three-run shot over the left field wall to give her team a 4-0 edge. Fortunately for WNMU, as the home team they were granted their half of the inning to close the gap and extend play. Leading off,
Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott HS) crushed one over right center for the first Mustang score of the game. In to pinch run, Jessica Martinez (Bayard, N.M/Cobre HS) was smart while rounding the bases finding home plate on a wild pitch to tack on one more run.

Before the comeback could be complete and fly ball to center field, ended it in favor of the Argonauts 4-2. Simjian was 2-for-3 on the day, driving in a run and an RBI to lead the offensive efforts. Defensively, a total of four errors.
GAME 2 vs. MONTANA STATE – BILLINGS
For the second game of Day 1 of the Dixie State Courtyard Classic, the Mustangs took on the Yellowjackets of MSU Billings in a late afternoon matchup in St. George, Utah. MSUB got things rolling with a pair of doubles, to rally off four runs in the first inning.

Scoreless throughout the second, the Yellowjackets bats remained hot going into the rest of the game. To cut the lead into half, Aliehs Ortiz (Rio Rancho, NM/V. Sue Cleveland HS) got things rolling with an infield single, later advancing on a sacrifice bunt from Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ). Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott HS) brought in a run with a single up the middle, followed by another off a single from Nikki Medina (El Paso, TX/Montwood HS ).

MSUB however would use another four runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn a mercy rule and close the game at 10-2.

UP NEXT:
The Mustang softball team will return to the Canyons Softball Complex for another two games for Day 2 of the Dixie State Courtyard Classic. Concordia (OR.) will kick things off at 10 a.m., before the Mustangs meet up with Skyhawks of Fort Lewis later in the afternoon.
