Tarleton Spoils Mustangs Hot Streak; Habitzreuther Adds Two Homeruns, Makes it Three Straight

SILVER CITY, N.M.  – With a hot start to conference play, the Western New Mexico softball team looked to remain unblemished against the 23rd ranked Tarleton Texans Sunday afternoon. Just as the Mustangs did in their second game against MSU, Tarleton held a slugfest of their own in Game 1 to take a mercy rule, 21-5 win. Game 2 saw the full 7 innings as Tarleton claimed a 7-2 victory to sweep the series.
GAME 1:
Stepping into the circle for her seventh start of the young season, Jalyn McClain (El Centro, CA/Central Union HS ) was whipping it, throwing five strikes in her first six pitches to force a quick TSU half of the inning.
Shelby Carter got her team on the board first, squeaking one over the left field fence for two runs. Another Texan added a double, putting two more runners in scoring position but would be left stranded. Leading off in the Mustangs half of the second inning, Grisdey Paredes –Alvarez chucked a double to left center to keep her team from a complete shutout. Left stranded, WNMU remained scoreless after two.
The top of the third is when the Texans bats caught fire, stringing together 10 runs on 7 hits to go up by  double digits. Lyanna Wadell came in after the Texans cycled through their lineup to help get the final two outs. The following inning the hitting streak continued as TSU placed the ball in open areas to tack on 8 more hits and nine runs.
Paredes –Alvarez made it 2-for-2 in her next at bat, going long over the left field wall to get the Mustangs first score of the game. Facing a different pitcher in what would be the final inning, WNMU benefited from a TSU error, to score their second run before Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) made it two straight games with a homerun, this time over the center field fence for 3 RBIs.
GAME 2:
Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) took to the mound for the second game, grabbing a quick strikeout before giving up a solo homerun to put TSU in front by one. Making it three straight, Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) added her third homerun of the season with a solo shot to left field to tie things up.
The following two innings would be quiet for both teams. A double followed up with a two-run homerun gave TSU three runs in the fourth, adding two more to their total in the fifth.
Holding steady through the sixth, WNMU tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh for the final 7-2 score.
Grisdey Paredes – Alvarez finished the day 3-for-5, with a double and a homerun, while Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) added two homeruns and four RBIs.
UP NEXT:
WNMU will head on a three game road stretch, starting with a trip to Canyon, Texas to take on the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M. Then they will head back in state to take on Eastern New Mexico.
