Men's Tennis Pair Well Against NAU

FLAGSTAFF, AZ -- Continuing their preseason, the Western New Mexico Men's Tennis team traveled up to Flagstaff, Arizona to take on the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona for a pair of preseason duals.

The early morning matchup saw the pair of Ruan Du Preez (Cape Town, South Africa /Swellendam HS) and Niko Barr (Whakatane, New Zealand/Trident) snatch a 7-5 victory at the No. 1 doubles position. David Valles (Guadalajara, Mexico/HYCIG) and partner Jose Mario Neto (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Padre Joao Bagozzi) paired well against NAU's Dillon and Schaefer, but fell by a 6-3 decision. The freshman duo of Shaurya Piplani () and Jace Crawford (Lovington, NM/Lovington HS), scored at No. 3, but could not secure the doubles point for the Mustangs.

As the teams entered singles play, Niko Barr (Whakatane, New Zealand/Trident) provided the most excitement at the No. 2 position falling in a tie breaker to Facundo Tumosa of NAU. The Lumberjacks claimed straight victories in each of the other positions.

After a short break, the Mustangs jumped into their second contest of the day against the Lumberjacks. Though they put up a fight, Barr and du Preez dropped their doubles match by a 6-4 decision. With a lineup change, the No. 2 pair featured Valles and Piplani who fell by the same 6-4 mark.

The second time around, it was freshman Shaurya Piplani () who made his opponent work for the win, falling by tiebreaker at the No. 5 slot.

The team will have a much shorter bus trip this week, heading to Surprise, Arizona to take on the Spirit of Ottawa (AZ), Friday Feb. 14 at 9:30 a.m.
