Softball Open Season with Pair of Wins Saturday

SILVER CITY, N.M. – With a revamped lineup to start the season, the Western New Mexico softball team got off to a hot start taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader over the visiting Adams State Grizzlies.

GAME ONE:
Adams State strung together a series of hits in the first, scoring off a single from Baylie Friar to go up 1-0. With another player in scoring position, catcher Nikki Medina (El Paso, TX/Montwood HS ) put an end to the top half of the inning catching the runner advancing to second for the final out.
After couple of quiet innings from both teams, the Mustang bats caught fire starting with a double from freshman Eliehs Ortiz. Another newcomer in Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS ) brought a run in to tie it up at one. Back-to-back walks put two more on the board for WNMU to take a 3-1 lead.
WNMU then used a big defensive top half of the fourth inning to return to the plate and continue what they started in the inning prior. In her Mustangs debut, Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS ) smoked one outside the center field fence for her first homerun in the Purple and Gold. As a team, WNMU tallied five more runs in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-1 edge.
The Mustangs played tough defense for the rest of the game, coming out on top despite a threat by the Grizzlies in the top of the seventh.

GAME TWO:
Nearly thirty minutes after game one, freshman Kristin Cocke (Safford, AZ/Safford HS) took to the circle to get game two going. With a runner on third, Cocke recorded her first career strikeout to end the threat and leave the ASU score blank. A wild pitch from the ASU pitcher allowed a WNMU runner to score, for the first run of the game in the bottom of the first.
Off the bat of Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside HS), a double to center field would score two runs in the bottom of the second. Aliehs Ortiz (Rio Rancho, NM/V. Sue Cleveland HS) singled to center field to bring Paredes-Alvarez in for three runs early on.
The Grizzlies added two runs in the fifth, but could not match the five from the Mustangs in their half of the inning. Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School ), Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott HS), and Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) each tallied singles to load the bases. Some savvy base running scored Burnett, setting up another double from the third baseman Paredes-Alvarez who scored another.
Adding to their total in the top of the sixth, WNMU needed to come up big on defense to hold off a late run from ASU. Enter sophomore, Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) in the sixth to help close out the game. In her 1.2 innings pitched, Vega allowed just one hit and one walk to take home the save.
In her first career start, Kristin Cocke (Safford, AZ/Safford HS) pitched a total of five innings, allowing 7 runs on 10 hits, while striking out three batters earning her the win. Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS ) finished the day with three hits, two of which were homeruns. Her four RBIs also led the team for the day.
