Men's Tennis Signs a Top 3 Nationally Ranked Player in Ecuador

Silver City, NM - Men's Tennis and Head Coach Alex Hunt announced the first signing of the 2020-2021 class. Native of Ambato, Ecuador, Patricio Larrea looks to be a force for the Mustangs.

"Patricio is the type of player that will help push this WNMU Mustang Tennis program forward to the place we are constantly striving to go" explains Hunt.

The Top 3 nationally ranked player in Ecuador has a 11+ Universal Tennis Rating and was the Best South American (COSAT), ranking at 30.  Larrea's accolades and accomplishments all began in 2017, where he was the Singles Champion of the COSAT South American Tournament Cup.

In 2018, he was the Doubles Champion at the National Tournament, Grade 1 Federation of Ecuadorian Tennis (G1 FET) and the South American Tournament Cup. As if winning doubles wasn't good enough, he went on and won the Singles Championship of the COSAT South American Tournament Cup as well.

Coach Hunt praises Larrea's style of play saying, "Patricio utilizes his very smooth game to outmaneuver his opponents on the court. He packs a punch behind a huge forehand and provides steady pace with a clean backhand and heavy serve."

Larrea's play got him an invite to participate in the Selective National Tournament to form the Ecuadorian Team for the South American Championship, in Uruguay in 2018.

After being a 2019 Doubles Finalist at the National Tournament G1 (FET), Larrea found himself at the top in the 2019 National Absolute Tournament G1 (FET).

Starting his freshman year in the fall Coach Hunt is excited to land Larrea saying, "I'm really excited to see how Patricio can impact our singles and doubles line-ups. He's the level of player that will have tons of individual success while pushing our team forward to achieve our team goals. It's going to be exciting to see!"
