Third Quarter Efforts Fall Short at NAU

Flagstaff, AZ – Western New Mexico combined for 275-total yards, scoring three touchdowns in a 55-21 loss to Division I Northern Arizona.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • NAU wasted no time, scoring at the 11:18 mark in their first drive to take an early lead.
  • A field goal attempt by Evan Rios (Madera, CA/Madera HS) was blocked and recovered by NAU at their own 31-yard line.
  • WNMU would come up with a blocked punt in the following drive, recovered by Jacob Valdez (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) at the NAU 8-yard line.
  • In the two plays following, Vincent Brown (Los Angeles, CA/Artesia) found the endzone for the Mustangs first score at the 1:38 mark. The PAT was blocked and returned for a defensive PAT by NAU.
  • The Lumberjacks would score three times in the second quarter, along with a field goal to take a 40-6 lead going into the half.
  • In their second drive of the third quarter, CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) opened with a 2-yard rush, before finding Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) for a 24-yard pass to the NAU 49-yard line.
  • Fowler then connected with Josh Powell on a 27-yard pass to put them at the home teams 23-yard line.
  • A final pass to Colson put the Mustangs in scoring position, with Vincent Brown (Los Angeles, CA/Artesia) capping off a 7-play, 75-yard drive for a WNMU touchdown. Colson found Sean North (Corona, CA/Santiago) in the endzone for the two-point conversion
  • The Mustang defense would come up big, stopping the Lumberjacks at the WNMU 4-yard line.
  • In the very next drive Fowler found Colson from 13-yards out for another Mustang touchdown. The PAT by Evan Rios (Madera, CA/Madera HS) was good.
  • NAU tacked on five points in the final quarter for a final score of 55-21.

Western New Mexico returns to Silver City next Saturday for their home opener against Central Washington at Ben Altamirano Field. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. (MST).
