Seniors Honored in Series Finale

Silver City, N.M-- The weather was bright and sunny, as the Western New Mexico Mustang softball team took to the field for the final time this season. After dropping the first two games of the series, the team looked for redemption in the series finale against Angelo State.

Before the game, seniors Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City), Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake)e, Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley), Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle), Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) and Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) were honored for their time as a Mustang.

As Angelo State stepped up to the plate, they wasted no time getting on the board. A single shot to center scored the first run of the day, followed by a three run homer to put the Rambelles up by four.

Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) started things off with a single to center, giving the team some breathing room having gone a few innings without a hit in previous games.

ASU's Courtney Barnhill caught just enough wind to send the ball over the fence, for a two-run shot and a 6-0 edge. In the top of the fourth, Taylor Fogle's crushed a two-run shot of her own to push the lead to nine.

In one last effort to score and extend the game, Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) would be left stranded after being walked.

Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) and Coplan recorded the two hits for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will hit the road for one last series agains the Pioneers of Texas Woman's next week in Denton, Texas.
