Maldonado's Ninth Homerun of the Season Leads to Mustang Win

Denton, Tex. -- On the road for the final road series of the season, the Western New Mexico Softball team faced off with the Pioneers of Texas Woman's Friday at Pioneer Field.

After a tough series against Angelo State the weekend prior, the Mustangs came together Friday to put another win in their column, and end the season on a high note.

Under the Friday night lights, the Mustangs opened play on a single down the left field line from Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School). Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) followed up with a single of her own putting two runners on, before Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) loaded the bases on a single to the circle.  A 4-0 count walked Grisdey Paredes - Alvarez, bringing in Garcia for the first run of the game.

The Pioneers threatened to score in the bottom of the third, after a SAC bunt advanced runners to second and third. Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) kept her composure striking out the following batter, and forcing the ground out for the final to outs of the inning and leaving the runners stranded.

Leading off at the top of the sixth, Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) smashed the first pitch over the center field for her ninth homerun of the season.

Maldonado was 2-for-3 on the day, leading the way as three other Mustangs recorded hits on the day.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) grabbed her fourth win of the season, allowing just four hits, walking two, and two strikeouts. Credit the defense behind Vega, who left six runners on base throughout the game.

A doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at Pioneer Field.
