Tennis Grabs Key Wins Over Regional Opponents in St. George

St. George, UT-- Men's and Women's tennis competed in St. George this past weekend, taking on key regional opponents in neutral site contests. 

The women kicked off the weekend Friday afternoon against Stanislaus State. Carolina Torrico (Boliva) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Columbia ) grabbed the lone win at #2 doubles, defeating Megan Hagerty and Kayla Nguyen 6-4. Through singles play, Camila Gomez (Bogota, Columbia ) took home a 6-3, 6-4 win over Maria Ochoa in #2 singles, for the Lady Mustangs lone win. Stanilaus State ultimately took home an 6-1 victory.

The Mustang men opened up play Saturday against Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks were ranked #7 in the South Central region, two spots above the Mustangs. Liam Fraboulet (France, Plouha/Lycée Kerraoul) and partner Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina ) grabbed the first win at #1 singles over Agritlley and Robles, 6-4. Fraboulet continued his succes in the #1 singles flight, taking down Max Lindqvist of CMU with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win. The Mustangs sealed the win, clinching straight set victories at #2, #3, #5 and #6 singles.

The women were next to take on Colorado Mesa, coming back from dropping the doubles-point and rallying back after dropping the first sets in singles play.  The grind paid off, as Western grabbed wins at #4, #6, #2 with Karina Diaz (Laredo, TX/United) sealing the deal with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Rebecca Osterberg for the fourth and final point.

"I am very proud of the way our team competed today. Colorado Mesa is a strong regional opponent and they were ranked ahead of us. For our men to come out and grab a 5-2 win is great. We will have another battle on our hands tomorrow vs. Metro State, with hopes of moving up in the regional rankings," said Head Coach Eric Sturgis 
Both teams wrapped up the weekend taking on Metropolitan State University - Denver in another top regional matchup. Both the men's and women's teams for the Roadrunners entered the dual ranked 5th in the region. 

The Mustang men started off taking 2 out of the 3 doubles matches to take an early lead. Freshman Tanaka Chibata would then get things started with a dominating, 6-1, 6-0 over Kacey Walisundara. Ranked 42nd in the nation, senior Liam Fraboulet (France, Plouha/Lycée Kerraoul) clinched the match for Western in a exciting 6-2, 7-5 straight set win over Daniel Llorente. Current Lone Star Conference Player of the Week, Joel Ockernahl (Muehlacker, Germany ) remained undefeated with a three-set win over MSUD David Kijak.

The Lady Mustangs dropped their dual to Metro State in a 3-4 heartbreaker to close out the weekend. Karina Kolovos Diaz continued her winning ways with a win over Eliza McKean 7-5, 6-2. Camila Gomez (Bogota, Columbia ) notched a win for Western at #2 singles defeating Alex Pessoa 6-3, 6-4, while teammate Carolina Torrico (Boliva) got her 2nd singles win of the weekend with a dominating performance over Ainsley Winterrowd 6-2, 6-2.
