Basketball Closes Out Second to Last Home Stand Saturday

Silver City, N.M – Western New Mexico Men's and Women's Basketball is back in action Saturday afternoon as they host the Cameron Aggies in the final few games of league play.

LAST TIME OUT:

The Lady Mustangs took the home court advantage, converting 44 percent of their shots for their fourth LSC win, eighth overall. Off to a slow start, WNMU trailed most of the first before going on a 6-0 run to get within two. In a close second quarter, Midwestern maintained a eight point lead going into the break.

The second half was all Western though, using a 40-30 scoring advantage and a last second rebound to hold on for a 69-67 win. Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) led all scorers with 22 points, going 6-14 (FG), 2-6 (3PT) and 8-9 from the free throw line while also grabbing seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Three others in double figures included, Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) (15), Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) (12), and Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School). Johnson and McFarland also grabbed seven boards a piece. WNMU held a slight 28-27 advantage in rebounds, and held their own despite four blocks by MSU.

As for the men it was a true battle of the Mustangs Thursday night. Hot from the start, Western used a 46 to 38 percent shooting advantage to take an 11-point lead after the first. MSU however would answer back in the second, shooting an astonishing 72 percent from beyond the arc, and nearly 60 percent from the floor to outscore Western 49-35, taking home a 81-78 win.

Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) led all scorers with 21 points, falling just short of a double-double with nine boards. Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) and Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) also finished in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. While the teams each tallied two blocks, Western held an 8-3 advantage in steals, few of which resulted in fast break dunks, and 32-31 in rebounds.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES:

The women of Cameron will enter Drag's Court seeking vengeance, having lost earlier this season on their home court, 67-64. Fields tallied 20 points in that match, while Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) snagged 13 rebounds and 12 points for a double-double.

The Aggies sit 7-16 overall, and 4-11 in league play. Western's win on Thursday puts them ninth in the rankings, one spot above Cameron and one spot out of the top-8 who go on to the conference tournament. They come off a 66-65 loss to UT – Permian Basin in Odessa, for their fifth loss in a row. Maighan Hedge and Ava Battese cashed in 18 points apiece, while Natalie Halbleib brought down eight for her team.

The Aggie men hold an 8-16 record overall, with a 4-10 league record, sitting in the eighth and final spot to make the conference tournament. They also come off a loss at UT- Permian Basin, falling 95-75, riding a four game losing streak. Zachary Dumas and Jordan Lewis dropped 11 points each, while UTPB held the team to a 41.3 field goal percentage.
The women will tip-off at 2 p.m., followed by the men at 4 p.m. Live stats and video stream will be available at wnmumustangs.com
