Lady Mustangs Grab A Big Win Over Midwestern State

Silver City, N.M—Looking to snap their losing streak, the Western New Mexico Lady Mustangs entered Drag's Court with hopes of grabbing a win and keeping their hopes of making playoffs alive.

MSU shot back-to-back threes to grab an early 6-0 lead. An and-one from Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School) put Western on the board halfway through the first. Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) connected on a jumper to cut into the lead, only the second basket of the game for WNMU.

A 6-0 run with two minutes to go, MSU Texas only led by two going into the second quarter.
Throughout the second it was a true battle of the Mustangs, each team trading baskets. A three from MSU's Mica Schneider put her team up by 10 for their largest lead of the game so far.

MSU shot 64.3 percent to Western's 50, scoring 23 points in the second to take a 37-29 lead going into the break. Just shy of ten points, Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) was on her way to her fifth game in a row scoring in double-digits.

In the first two minutes out of the break the Western defense came out strong, grabbing three boards to keep the possession. Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) got the shot to fall for the first basket of the half.
Slowly but surely, Western would work their way back into the game trailing by five with three minutes left in the third. With the steal and the layup Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) put the Mustangs within four.

A fouls by Midwestern brought McFarland and Fields to the foul line draining 2-of-3, trailing by one with a quarter left.

Back-to-back steals from McFarland and Vickery gave way to fast break for Western for a five-point lead. Midwestern would tie it at 57 before threes from Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) and Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) gave the lead back to Western.

Despite missed layups, Western could not convert on the possession.

With a two-point lead and 36.1 seconds left WNMU gained one last possession off the knee of MSU. Running the clock down, but a shot clock violation gave MSU 6.1 seconds. Hannah Reynolds for MSU could not connect as the Lady Mustangs of Western New Mexico avenged their loss earlier this season taking a 69-67 win.

Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) finished with 22 points to lead all scorers, going 6-14 from the floor, 2-6 from beyond the arc and 8-9 from the free throw line. Three other Mustangs in double-digits included, Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) (15), Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) (12) and Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School) (10).
