Women's Basketball Claims Second Straight Victory Behind Johnson's Double-Double

Box Score Silver City, N.M—After grabbing a big win over Midwestern State Thursday night, the Lady Mustangs needed another in Saturday afternoon to keep their chance of making playoff alive.

Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) put the Mustangs on the board first on the first possession. A three from Ava Battese gave the Aggies their first lead of the game at 9-7.  At the end of the first quarter, Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) led with eight points to give the Mustangs a 19-14 edge.

Barely two minutes into the second quarter, Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) scored on a driving layup to mark her fifth game in a row scoring in double-figures.

Despite grabbing four more rebounds, the Mustangs kept the pressure on defense limiting the Aggies to 43 percent from the field, and causing eight turnovers. Western used a slight 46 percent advantage to out-score the Aggies, contributing 18 of the 40 points from inside the paint.

It was a quiet throughout the third quarter with both teams in single digit scoring up until the minute thirty mark when Cameron knocked down a free throw.  Both teams struggled to get the ball to fall, shooting under twenty percent in the quarter.

What was a 12-point lead, turned into six, Western needed a big fourth quarter to hold the edge. Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School) played a huge factor in the paint, building the lead back to nine with just over a minute to play.

Johnson had a career night posting 18 points, while grabbing 11 rebounds. Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) finished with 22 points for her fifth game in a row in double-figures.

The women will look to continue their winning ways next week when they hit the road for the last time, facing off against Texas A&M- Kingsville and Angelo State.
