Mustang Men Meet Up Thursday

Silver City, N.M – Western New Mexico men's basketball returns home for a two games, first against Midwestern State in a battle of the Mustangs on Thursday, followed by Cameron Aggies on Saturday.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Mustang men hit the road for the second to last time this past weekend, traveling to West Texas before coming back in state to take on Eastern New Mexico.
 
Versus West Texas, the Buffs shot 58 percent in the first half to take a 57-34 going into the break. The Mustangs struggled offensively, going 11-24 from the floor through the first half and 10-19 from the foul line. Western did however tally three blocks and five steals to lead the defensive efforts. On the night, the team grabbed 12 steals and 4 blocks to the Buffs 4 blocks and 5 steals.
 
Five Buffs finished in double digits on their way to a 104-81 win. Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air), Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) and Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) finished with 12, 11 and 12 points respectively. Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) had 2 of the 4 team blocks, while Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) and Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) grabbed the other two.
 
In their second game of the weekend, the battle of cross state rivals continued. Eastern held the Mustangs to 36.6 percent from the floor to take a 48-39 lead at the half. Despite a second half run, the Greyhounds could not be stopped hitting over 60 percent of their shots in every category in the second half to take a 98-80 victory.
 
Four Mustangs finished with double-digits, with Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) leading the way with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) followed up with 11 point, going 4-6 from the floor and 3-5 from the perimeter.

MIDWESTERN STATE MUSTANGS: 
 
MSU – Texas comes to Silver City 6-17 overall, 2-11 in conference play sitting one game ahead of WNMU. Since their win over Western back in January, the Mustangs of Midwestern have struggled to get back in the winner's column.
 
JaJuan Starks leads his team's offensive efforts, scorings 15.7 points per game, fifth in the conference ranks. Teammate, Elijah Lee facilitates the offense with 4.3 assists per game. Defensively, Gilbert Thomas Jr. grabs 8.2 boards to lead the team, while also averaging 0.8 blocks per game.


HISTORY VERSUS MIDWESTERN STATE:

MSU won the first meeting this season 88-70 at D.L Ligon Coliseum back on January 12th. Last season Western grabbed a 86-84 win on Drag's Court for their first win over MSU, who leads the series 11-1 and 3-1 in Silver City.
 
 
SENIORITY:
 
The senior class is making the most of their last season, with Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) at the forefront with 12.2 ppg. Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) averages 11.0, Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) (6.1), Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) (7.5), Davis Wade (Jackson, MS/Will C Wood) (6.1).
 
 
CASH –ING IT IN:
 
True freshman Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) has proven himself on court averaging 7.0 ppg, hitting over 50 percent of his shots in all categories. His 51.9 percent ranks sixth on the team, but leads the team in 3-point percentage (59.1), and free throws (86.4%).
