Mustangs Push Javelinas in Road Contest to Close Out the Year

Kingsville, TX – A handful of Mustangs found themselves in foul trouble Saturday night against Texas A&M Kingsville. Trailing at the half, WNMU scored 43 points to TAMUK's 41, but fell short of making it three straight. Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) led all scorers with 21-points, making it three consecutive games in double-figures.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) – 21 PTS | 8-13 FG | 3-3 FT | 5 AST | 3 STL
Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) – 17 PTS | 4-6 3FG | 5-5 FT | 3 STL
Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) – 14 PTS | 5 REB | 1 AST
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) got off to a hot start draining a three, then following through on defense grabbing the steal and the fast break layup to score the first five points.
  • WNMU would go up by seven before TAMUK scored at the line.
  • The Mustangs led until around the half way point, when the Javelinas forced the turnover and the go ahead basket at 19-18.
  • Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) followed up with a layup to regain the 20-19 lead.
  • A couple of three pointers by TAMUK gave way to a nine point lead, but contributions from multiple Mustangs put them within eight going into the break.
  • Nearly seven minutes in TAMUK when up by 11, and maintained that edge until a free throw by Giron cut it to nine.
  • The Javelinas took their largest lead at 71-55 with three to play, leaving WNMU to play catch up in a short amount of time.
  • Together Giron and Sanders led their time to the get within four.
  • CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) put WNMU within five, but that would mark the last basket for the Mustangs as they fell 81-75.
