Mustangs Unable to Tame Lions on the Road

Commerce, Tex.— Mustang Football faced off with the first of possibly a few ranked opponents this season in No. 23 A&M Commerce. The Lions hosted the Mustangs for their homecoming game, and defended their home field with a 62-21 win Saturday afternoon.

DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) – 15 carries | 70-yards

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Despite crossing over into Lion territory, the Mustangs opted to punt in their opening drive.
  • A&M – Commerce wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on a 21-yard pass to get on the board first.
  • Forced to punt after the score, the Mustang defense came up big with a interception from Troy Hall (Hesperia, CA/Silverado HS) followed by an 18-yard return to get back in Lion territory.
  • DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) rushed for 20-yards to the TAMC 14-yard line, setting up a pass by CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) to Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) to complete the drive and tie the game at 7.
  • The tie was short lived as the Lions special teams took it upon themselves to retake the lead with a 91-yard return.
  • A last minute WNMU field goal attempt was blocked, going into the break with a 27-7 score in favor of the Lions.
  • After a quick start of the second half for TAMC, Josh Powell racked up 56-yards receiving for a WNMU touchdown.
  • Senior Joe Tito (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron-Memorial HS) snagged an interception to prevent another Lion score.
  • In the fourth, CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) connected with Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) for a second time from 10-yards out to put WNMU over the 20-point mark.
  • The Lions capped off the game with two more scores for a  final of 62-21.
 
UP NEXT:
Mustang football returns home to host the Javelinas of Texas A&M – Kingsville, Saturday Nov. 2. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. for the final game under the lights this season.
