Rivalry Week Comes to Silver City; Chile Bowl on the Line.

Silver City, N.M. – The rivalry between Western New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico dates back to 1934, with the first meeting ever on Oct. 12 of that year. The first two meetings were held in Silver City, both of which ended in ties. The third meeting on October 14, 1935 saw the Greyhounds take a 12-6 victory for the first win what would later become the Chile Bowl.
 
LAST TIME OUT:
  • The Mustangs return to Ben Altamirano Field after a tough matchup in San Angelo against the Rams.
  • WNMU got on the board in fourth minute of the first quarter to answer an ASU score.
  • With the possession going into the second quarter, the Mustangs capped off a 6-play, 99-yard drive with a three-yard run from Oly Taase to go up 14-7.
  • It was all ASU from then on, scoring twice in the second and twice more in the second half for a 31-14 victory.
  • The weekend prior, behind a strong defensive effort, the Mustangs snapped a losing streak dating back to 2017 with a 47-28 victory over the Falcons of UT Permian Basin.
  • Roosevelt Calhoun Jr. (Reno, NV/Hug HS) posted an impressive stat line with 10 solo tackles, 12 total on the night, on top of two tackles for a loss of 11-yards, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception.
THE RIVALRY CONTINUES:
  • The first meeting between the two teams was on October 12, 1934 in Silver City.
  • Greyhounds have won the last 14 meetings, including a 55-9 win last season in Portales.
  • In the overall series, Eastern New Mexico holds a 41-15-2 advantage.
  • In the conference rankings, ENMU sits 5th in the offensive category with WNMU following closely behind at #6.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
Eastern New Mexico (4-2, 2-2 LSC)
  • Greyhounds two losses have come to ranked opponents (#12 Texas A&M Commerce, #4 Tarleton)
  • Receiving votes in the latest AFCA Division II National Poll, and featured in that category in four different weeks so far this season.
  • The Mustangs will have to turn it up on defense to stop the nation's top rushing attack, averaging nearly 400-yards per game on the ground.
  • Through conference play, the Greyhounds rank third in total offense with 435-yards a game this season.
  • At the forefront of the ENMU rushing attack is Paul Terry
    • Terry has ran for 100-yards or more in every game this season.
    • Ranks 2nd in all of Division II with 987-yards and 6 TDs on the year.
      • 177 attempts | 987-yards | 164.50 yards per game
  • Wyatt Strand is behind the passing efforts for the Greyhounds, completing 27 of 58 passes with 3 interceptions for 340-yards and 3 TDs
  • On the receiving end is Zachary Fields who has 11 receptions for 184-yards, 16.73-yards with 3 TDs.
  • Defensively, Lamontre Huval leads the team with 46 total tackles, 24 of which are solo and has 2.0 sacks for a loss of 6-yards and an interception.
  • Noah Sweitzer also gets it done on the defensive end with 39 tackles 1.5 TFL, three pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Saturday's matchup will be a battle of the leading rushing offense and leading passing offense in the Lone Star Conference so far this season.
