Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mustangs Unable to Overcome Deficit in Loss to Angelo State

Silver City, NM -- In search of the answer, the Mustang men had a quick turnaround as they played host to the Angelo State Rams Saturday afternoon on Drag's Court.

Angelo started the half getting on the board first after drawing the foul. Another three would put the Rams up by five, before a made free throw by Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) broke the run. Angelo would go up by as many as 15, hitting 5-6 from three-point range through eight minutes of play.

A jumper by Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) would put the Mustangs in double-digits. Finding their groove, Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) connected in the paint, followed up by a basket and the foul drawn by Eddie GIron.

With just under three minutes to play the Rams took their largest lead of the game going up by 25.

The Mustangs struggled to slow down the Rams offense. Through the first half the Mustangs shot 10-26 (38.5 %) from the field, 1-7 (14.3%) from the perimeter and 6-11 (54.5%) from the foul line. Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) led with seven points as the team trailed 27-51 going into the break.

With the ball in their possession at the start of the second half, the Mustangs needed to overcome the 24-point deficit.

Two big blocks from Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) got the Mustangs on their feet. Keeping the pressure on Western would cause the turnover and draw the foul to bring Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) to the line.

Working to close the gap, Western turned to their youth. Enter Hunter Conn (Las Cruces, NM/Mesilla Valley Christian) who connected on layup after a steal by Ian Hohenstein (Veracruz, Mexico/Faith Christian Academy). A dunk by Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) brought the Mustangs to their feet, still fighting to close the gap.

Although the Mustangs outscored the Rams in the second half, the deficit was too much as Western fell 87-64.

Two Mustangs finished in double-digits, Woodson with 12 and Avalos with 10. Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) followed up with 9 and CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) and Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) each contributed 8.

On the road next week, Western will return for the last week of the month, taking on UT – Permian Basin Thursday Jan. 31 at 6 p.m.
