Big Second Quarter Propels Lady Mustangs Over Cameron

Lawton, OK-- Western outscored the Aggies 20-9 in the second quarter, holding on to a 67-64 victory on the road for their second conference win and sixth win overall. 

The Lady Mustangs shot 30.3 percent from the floor in the first half, to their oppositions 28.6 percent to take a 32-25 lead going into the break. Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) grabbed 10 rebounds, added six points and one steal through the first two quarters. Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) and Sara Lopez (El Paso, Texas/Horizon High School) led with eight points each. 

The second half put Western to the test, narrowly outscoring Cameron 16-14 in the third quarter. The fourth and final frame was all Cameron as they scored 25 points to Western's 19, but a tough defensive effort gave way to Western's second road victory. 

As a team Western out shot the Aggies, hitting 39.3 percent of their shots from floor, 33.3 percent from the perimeter, and 68.8 percent from the foul line, despite eight blocks by the Aggies.  Defensively, the Lady Mustangs grabbed four more rebounds than their opponents, as well as 10 steals, causing 19 turnovers. 

Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) led all scorers with 20 points, going 5-of-9 (FG)  2-of-2 (3pt) and 8-of-9 (FT). Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) grabbed another double-double with a 12 point, 13 rebound performance.  

Sara Lopez (El Paso, Texas/Horizon High School) and Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) rounded it out for the Lady Mustangs, contributing 13 and 11 points respectively. Lopez also added five steals to her stat line. 

The Western Women will look to continue their road swing Saturday against Midwestern State at 2 p.m. (CST). Live stats and video stream will be provided by the host.
