Box Score Laredo, TX—Mustang volleyball (3-6) looked to bounce back after last night's five set loss to Texas A&M Kingsville, taking on the Dust Devils of Texas A&M International (1-9) in a non-conference match up.
Texas A&M International is currently a member of the Heartland Conference, set to combine with the Lone Star Conference starting Fall 2019.
Mustang MAGIC- It took a couple points for the Mustangs to get rolling in the first set. Middle blockers
Christiana DuBose (Bowie, MD/Bowie High School) and
Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School) would come alive and take control of the offense.
The Mustangs would take the lead at 23-20 on a solo block by right side hitter,
Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School).
The Dust Devils would not go down without a fight. With the game tied up at 24-24, it would take extra points to finish the set. The Mustangs would go up on a Dust Devil error, and an ace by
Sophia Mitchell (Houston, TX/Katy Taylor High School) would end the set 28-26 in favor of the Mustangs. Mitchell's ace was the fourth of the set.
The second set saw the Mustangs down again early. They would then go on a five-point run to take the lead at 7-6, forcing a Dust Devil timeout.
The teams traded points until late in the set. Mustangs would pull ahead 24-20 on a
Sarai Migao (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School) kill, and a ball handling error would end the set 25-20 giving Western N.M a two set lead.
Set three was all Western N.M, going up 5-1 on efficient hitting and disciplined blocking. The Mustangs would increase their lead to 17-7 on an ace by
Adriana Leon (Lodi, CA/Sahuarita High School) and never looked back.
Big kills by outsides
Selai Damuni (Kula, HI/Tempview High School) and
Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) pushed the Mustangs through the final points taking the set 25-13 and the match. Augustine lead all hitters with 11 kills (.421)
Samuelu would finished the game with eight kills on 11 attempts with one error for a .636 hitting percentage.
Multiple Mustangs contributed to the seven service aces, as well as eight total blocks.
The Mustangs return home to Drag's Court next weekend, taking on Cameron and Midwestern State.
