DALLAS, T.X. — Western NM defeated Cameron 3-0 on Friday at Burg Center, winning 25-18, 25-18, 26-24. Western NM hit .253 with 40 kills while holding Cameron to a .127 hitting percentage.
Western NM opened the first set with seven straight points on Hannah Haggard's (Tucson, AZ/Tanque Verde High School) serve, including two Haggard aces and blocks involving Isabella Brewer, Daphne Posthumus (Lelystad, Netherlands/CCNV Harderwijk (Netherlands)) and Hailey Meeks. Cameron later closed the score to 20-15, but Western NM answered with late kills from Jayden Hughes (High Rolls, NM/Cloudcroft High School), Meeks, Payton Zenan (Sahuarita, AZ/Sahuarita HS) and Brynlee Barris to finish the set. Western NM took the set 25-18.
In the second set, Western NM overcame an 8-3 deficit, using Savanna Haefs' (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista High School) service stretch and kills from Barris and Jade Rampton (Nelson, New Zealand/Shanghai American School) to pull even at 8-8. After Cameron tied the set at 10-10, Barris put down a kill and Western NM added two more points on Cameron attack errors to move in front 13-10. Western NM stayed ahead from there and finished the set 25-18 on a Barris kill from Haefs.
In the third set, Western NM erased Cameron's 24-23 edge with a Rampton kill, a Barris kill and a Cameron attack error to take the third set, 26-24. Earlier, Western NM turned a 5-2 deficit into an 8-5 lead with six straight points, including a Haefs service ace, a Rampton-Barris block and kills from Barris and Rampton.
Barris led Western NM with 14 kills and 16.0 points while hitting .650, adding one service ace and two blocks. Haefs finished with 19 assists, two service aces and six digs. Mikelle McAfee (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School.) collected 10 digs and added three assists and a service ace. Posthumus recorded six total blocks and added two kills.
