Softball Records 16 Total Hits During Day Two of Dixie State/Easton Classic

ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The offense pounded out 16 hits on the day, as the Western New Mexico University softball team stayed right with No. 8 Colorado Mesa, until the Mavericks pulled away late for the 7-1 victory. During game two, Hawaii Hilo used a pair of big innings to take the 12-6 win as the Lady Mustangs played in the Dixie State/Easton Classic Friday.

In a rematch from the first game of the season, the Lady Mustangs (1-8) went toe-to-toe with the No. 8 Mavericks (8-0), keeping the game 1-0 until the fourth inning. Junior Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) got things going for WNMU in the second when she launched a solo home run.

Sophomore Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) took it from there as she dominated Colorado Mesa three innings, along just a bunt single and a few walks, but no runs. The Mavericks broke out in the fourth, as they used a home run and a pair of doubles to score five in the inning and take a 5-1 lead after four.

The Lady Mustangs threatened in the sixth when redshirt freshman Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) singled and freshman Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez walked, but a double play followed to end the inning. Colorado Mesa closed the scoring with a pair of RBI doubles in the home half of the frame to move out to a 7-1 lead.

Redshirt junior Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) singled in the seventh, but that was the only baserunner the Mavericks allowed the rest of the way.

Colorado Mesa held a slight 8-6 advantage on hits, while WNMU committed the only error. Habitzreuther and Misenhimer led the offense with two hits apiece, with Gasteulum driving in the only run. In the circle, Waddell went the first three innings and ended up with the loss (1-4) as she allowed five earned runs. Sophomore Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) tossed the remaining three innings and allowed just two earned runs.

Manwarren had two hits to lead the Mavericks, while Pakes and Hodgson drove in two runs. In the circle, Hodgson went all seven innings and allowed just the one earned run to pick up the victory (2-0).

In game two, the Lady Mustangs struck first against Hawaii Hilo (8-3) when Habitzreuther hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Maldonado in the first inning. The Vulcans came back to tie with a run in the second and then used a grand slam in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

In the fifth, Misenhimer and freshman Dominique Gonzales singled and after a pair of outs, Garcia delivered with two outs when she singled in both runs to leave it a 5-3 game at five.

Hawaii Hilo used another big inning to take control again when they scored five runs in the top of the sixth for a 10-3 advantage. WNMU then used a big error to get back in the game in the home half. After two quick outs were recorded, Misenhimer struck out for the third out, or so it appeared, but the catcher was unable to complete the out, as the error kept the inning going. Then the Lady Mustangs promptly took advantage with Gonzales and Maldonado both singling to load the bases for senior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley). She laced a double that split the gap and cleared the bases to cut the deficit to four at 10-6.

The Vulcans added two more in the seventh to move out to a 12-6 lead and in their final at-bat, WNMU got Habitzreuther on base via hit-by-pitch, but three straight outs followed to end the game.

Maldonado, Garcia and Gonzales all posted two-hit games, with Gutierrez driving in three runs. In the circle, O'Neill started and went the first four innings to end up with the loss (0-4) as she allowed five earned runs. Waddell finished out the final three innings and allowed five earned runs as well.

The Vulcans had four players (Gaspar, Kaleikini, Thomas and Steadmon) all post three hits apiece. Lincoln drove in five, with four coming in on her grand slam. In the circle, Mejia went the first five innings to claim the win (1-1) as she allowed three earned runs. Gonzales went the final two innings and gave up three unearned runs. Hawaii Hilo held a 19-10 edge on hits.

WNMU will conclude the Dixie State/Easton Classic on Saturday with a single game against Dominican (CA) starting at 10 a.m.
