Five WNMU Basketball Seniors to be Honored Saturday

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Saturday will mark the final home games as Western New Mexico University Mustangs for five seniors, Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani), Lucy Benning (El Paso, TX/El Paso), Myla Woods-Brown (Roswell, NM/Roswell), Melody McLaughlin (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View) and Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) that will be honored between games against Midwestern State. 

Below is a recap of the careers of all five seniors.

Melody McLaughlin (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View):

WNMU (2017-18): During her one season at WNMU, McLaughlin has played in every game, compiling 6.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, two blocks and 1.74 steals in averaging 31 minutes per contest. She scored a season-high in points with 14 against Cameron and has five games this season with at least 10 or more points. McLaughlin added an eight rebound game against Texas A&M-Commerce and posted a pair of five steal games against St. Mary's and New Mexico Highlands. She ranks eighth in the conference in both steals and steals per game.  For her one-year career at WNMU, McLaughlin has 142 total points, 86 rebounds, 46 assists and 40 steals.
Newman: McLaughlin spent the past two years playing at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. During the 2015-16 she played in 19 games, averaging just under a point a game and 1.3 rebounds per game. She tallied a season-high four points against UT Permian Basin. During the 2016-17 season she played in three games, averaging 1.7 points per game. She went for a high of five points against Central Christian (Mo.). She missed most of the 2016-17 season due to injury.
Pima (AZ) CC: McLaughlin started all 31 games as a sophomore averaging 13.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. She shot 81 percent from the free throw line and scored a season-high 26 points against Tucson Sol. As a freshman she appeared in 32 games and started 30 averaging 8.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. She scored a season-high 22 points against Utah State Eastern College.

Lucy Benning (El Paso, TX/El Paso):

WNMU (2017-18): Benning played in 12 games this season before injury sidelined her until this weekend. She tallied seven points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Benning scored a season-high three points against Tarleton State and had two rebounds against West Texas A&M. For her career at WNMU, Benning was a regular on both the RMAC and LSC All-Academic lists and totaled 53 points, 60 rebounds, six blocks, seven steals and two assists while playing in 39 games.
WNMU (2016-17): Benning saw action in 26 games, starting seven. She averaged 16.8 minutes per game, made 31 percent from the field, while scoring 40 points and pulling down 50 rebounds. She also added six blocks and six steals. Benning scored a season-high nine points at West Texas A&M in which she went 3-5 from three-point range. She pulled down six rebounds versus Cameron.
WNMU (2015-16): Redshirt season. She was named to the All-RMAC Academic Team.
WNMU (2014-15): Benning played 10 minutes versus the University of the Southwest tallying six points, an assists and three rebounds.
High School: Benning, a 5-foot-10 guard from El Paso High School, averaged 14.5 points per game as a senior and connected on 74 percent of her free throws and was named to the All-Tournament Team (Loretto Tournament). During her junior season, she averaged 10.1 points per game, tallied 245 total points for the season, while also shooting well from the line hitting at a 70 percent clip. She was named to the Second-Team All-District and was the MVP of the Santa Teresa Tournament.

 Myla Woods-Brown:

WNMU (2017-18): Woods-Brown has played in 24 games this season, averaging 2.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.25 assists, nine blocks and 13 steals, while averaging 17.9 minutes per game. She scored a season-high seven points against West Texas A&M and grabbed 12 rebounds against UT Permian Basin. For her career at WNMU she played in 32 games, scored 78 points, pulled down 134 rebounds, sent back 12 blocks, dished out 44 assists and swiped 17 steals.
WNMU (2016-17): Redshirt season.
WNMU (2015-16): Woods-Brown saw action in eight games, starting six. She tallied 13 points, four steals, three blocks, 14 assists, 22 rebounds, two free throws, a three-pointer and five field goals. She went for a season-high four points against UT Permian Basin and brought down a high in rebounds with five three times versus Oklahoma Panhandle, University of the Southwest and CSU-Pueblo.
NNM: originally from Roswell, Brown spent the past two seasons at Northern New Mexico in Espanola. She put up solid numbers both seasons for the Eagles averaging 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 31 games as a freshman. During her sophomore year, she added 8.9 points and 6.8 rebounds in 29 contests.

 Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani):
WNMU (2017-18): Botelho has once again been one of the most consistent Lady Mustangs, as she has played in 24 games this year tallying 6.8 points per game, 3.8 rebounds, .83 assists, leading the team in blocks with 12 and adding 27 steals. She went for a high in scoring of 19 twice against UT Permian Basin (also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds) and 19 points against Texas A&M-Commerce. She has eight games with at least 10 points. She has two games with 10 rebounds, as she also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards versus Texas Woman's. She posted three blocks against Midwestern State and had three steals against Texas A&M-Kingsville. For her four-year career at WNMU, Botelho played in 106 games, as she never missed a game during her career. She amassed  931 points, 461 rebounds, 79 assists, 51 blocks and 122 steals. Botelho logged an incredible 2,642 minutes during her career.
WNMU (2016-17): Botelho was second on the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game while brigning down 3.8 rebounds per game, 18 blocks and 22 steals in averaging 28.2 minutes per game. She started in all 27 games. She scored a season-high 23 points against Eastern New Mexico and went for 20 or more points twice. She tallied double-digit scoring in 17 games including finishing the season with nine straight games accumulating double-digits in points. Botelho grabbed nine rebounds twice against Northern New Mexico and UT Permian Basin. She tallied four steals against Texas Woman's. She made 36 percent from the field, connecting on 129 field goals.
WNMU (2015-16): Botelho was third on the team in points per game averaging 8.6 per contest. She also added 5.1 rebounds per game, 17 assists, 14 blocks, 41 steals, 28 free throws and a team-high 106 field goals in playing in all 28 games, starting 27. She averaged 26.0 minutes per contest. Botelho had a pair of double-doubles against South Dakota Mines with 16 points and 12 rebounds and then against Fort Lewis with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She scored a season-high 21 points versus Northern New Mexico and a high in rebounds with 12 twice against University of the Southwest and South Dakota Mines. Botelho came away with five steals against Western State.
WNMU (2014-15): Botelho shined in her first season with the Lady Mustangs logging big minutes in crucial games as a true freshman. Not only did she play in all 27 games, she started in 11 where she averaged 20.7 minutes, 7.7 points and 4.7 rebounds. She also came away with 32 steals, seven blocks, 18 assists and made 90 field goals. She averaged double-digits in points in 10 games with a season and career-high 14 points occurring four times against Colorado Mesa, CSU-Pueblo, Black Hills State and Chadron State. Botelho recorded a double-double against Adams State with 12 points and a season and career-high 11 rebounds. In that same game she also had her high in blocks with three. 
High School: Botelho, a 5-foot-10 forward, played at Iolani High School in Honolulu where she averaged 11.5 points per game as a senior. The honors poured in including First-Team All-ILH as a senior, Second-Team All-ILH as a junior, honorable mention All-Hawaii Division I All-Star (2014), Honolulu Star Advertiser, All-State selection, Fab 15 All-Star and Jeremy Robinson, Senior Girl's Classic Game All-Star Pick.

Latrell Spivey:
WNMU (2017-18): Spivey has played in 23 games this year tallying 7.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, .87 assists, eight blocks and 13 steals in averaging 24 minutes per game. He went for a season-high 17 points against Southwest in which he also had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Spivey posted three other double-doubles against Texas A&M-International (15 points, 11 rebounds), Arizona Christian (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Embry Riddle (15 points and 12 rebounds). He has seven games with at least 10 points and five games with at least 11 rebounds. He sent back three blocks against Texas A&M-International and three steals against Tarleton State. For his two-year career at WNMU, Spivey tallied 49 games, playing in every game, 390 points, 379 rebounds (leading the team in rebounding both seasons), 50 assists, 23 blocks and 23 steals. He logged 1,288 minutes on the floor.
WNMU (2016-17): Spivey nearly averaged a double-double in his first season with the Mustangs tallying 8.6 points and 9.1 rebounds. In addition to leading the team in rebounding, field goal percentage at 51 percent, added 10 steals and 30 assists in playing in all 26 games, starting 25. He went for six double-doubles on the year with his top scoring performance of 17 points coming against Oklahoma Panhandle and top rebounding game with 19 against Embry Riddle. He had 11 games with at least 10 points scored and eight games with at least 11 rebounds. He posted two blocks in a game three times. Spivey made seven field goals in a game twice.
GCC: Spivey, from Phoenix, Ariz., is a 6-foot-8, 215 pound forward that is the only transfer of the list having played this past season at Glendale Community College. This past season he averaged eight points, six rebounds and shot 48 percent from the floor.
