SILVER CITY, NM — Following a historic 2025–26 campaign that rewrote the record books,
Mark Bunker will remain at the helm of the Western New Mexico University Athletics men's basketball program, as the university announced a contract extension for its head coach.
Bunker's extension comes on the heels of the most successful season in program history, as the Mustangs reached new heights on the court with 22 regular season victories and continued to establish themselves as a rising force within the Lone Star Conference. The team reached the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the first time in the program's history as well as a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Under his leadership, WNMU not only produced record-setting performances but also built a foundation centered on discipline, resilience, and team-first mentality.
Individually, the Mustangs saw multiple players earn postseason honors. WNMU placed four student-athletes on the All-Lone Star Conference Team, highlighting the depth and talent across the roster.
Andre Harris (Mesa, AZ/Hillcrest Prep) was awarded first team all-conference honors,
Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) received second team all-conference honors and
Isaiah Broady (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) and
Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) received third team all-conference honors.
NoNo Brown (Gilbert, AZ/Perry High School) was also honored on the all-conference Freshman team, further adding to the list of recognitions for the Mustangs. In addition, the program celebrated a major individual milestone with a selection to the All-South Central District Team from Harris, further emphasizing the impact of its top performers on a regional level.
"First and foremost, I'm incredibly grateful to Western New Mexico University for the trust and belief they've shown in me with this opportunity to continue to lead the men's basketball program," said Bunker. "This place means a lot to me and my family, not just as a coach, but as someone who values community, hard work, and developing young men the right way.
"Coaching here isn't just about wins and losses, it's about building a culture of accountability, toughness, and pride in wearing the Mustang jersey. I'm excited to continue growing this program, representing the Silver City community, and helping our players succeed both on and off the court. The job's not finished, we're just getting started."
Since taking over the program, Bunker has steadily elevated the Mustangs, turning WNMU into a competitive and respected opponent across the conference. This past season marked a turning point, as the team's success reflected not only talent on the roster but also the culture and standards instilled by the coaching staff.
The coaching accolades further reflect the growing recognition that the program received throughout the past season. Coach Bunker was named the HoopDirt NCAA DII Coach of the Week for Week 14, NABC South Central District Coach of the Year as well as the Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year, underscoring the transformative impact of the program's leadership during this historic campaign.
Interim Athletic Director Matt Enriquez emphasized that the extension is a direct result of both on-court achievements and the long-term vision Bunker has created. "After a truly historic season, it became clear that the momentum of our men's basketball program is no accident," Enriquez said. "Coach Bunker has built something special and this contract extension reflects our commitment to sustaining that success and continuing to compete at the highest level. We're proud of what's been accomplished and even more excited about where this program is headed under his leadership."
With the extension secured, the Mustangs now turn their attention to the future, aiming to build on a historic season and continue their upward trajectory. Under Bunker's guidance, WNMU men's basketball is not only chasing championships but also solidifying a culture that will sustain success for years to come.
