Box Score Austin, TX--The Western New Mexico Mustangs put up a season-high 85 points Monday afternoon, but were unable to overcome the high-powered offense of #24 St. Edward's University.
The Mustangs opened the game on a 6-0 run before the host Hilltoppers were able to put any points on the board. Western would hold their lead for the first several minutes before St. Edward's got their offense on track. Good execution and timely rebounding by the Hilltoppers would give them a 12-point lead at the half, 44-32.
The Hilltoppers would begin the second half right where they had left off, and would see their lead stretched to as many as 23 points before the Mustangs began their final run. Good defense by the Mustangs helped them hold the Hilltoppers, who were shooting nearly 40% from 3 pt range coming into the day, to only 9-32 from beyond the arc, and Western would cut the lead to as much as 10 points, but good execution by the Hilltoppers helped them come away with the win by a final score of 98-85.
Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) led all scorers with 25 points on 7-12 shooting and added 6 rebounds.
Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) and
Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) would add 11 points each for the Mustangs.
Western enters the Christmas holidays 3-5 (0-1 LSC) on the young season. They will be back in action on January 3rd at home when they host in-state and Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico.
