Women's Basketball Falls to Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, CO – Coming off a tough loss the day before, the Mustangs looked to turn it around against a tough Colorado Mesa team. The Mavericks earned a decisive 80-52 win over Arizona Christian the night before. 
 
Colorado Mesa scored first and took the reins going up 10-2 early on. The Mustangs struggled to get a shot off against a tough Maverick defense, trailing 22-7 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Mustangs improved in the second, going 7-22 from the field. Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy ) would hit the team's first three, to cut into the lead but the Mavericks could not be denied behind the arc hitting 6-of-10 three pointers in the first half alone. Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) led the Mustangs with six points and seven rebounds, trailing by 20 going into the break.
 
Every time the Mustangs would hit a three, the Mavericks answered with one of their own. Colorado Mesa finished the game 8-of-15 behind the arc for a 53.3 percentage, to Mustangs 21 percent. The Mustangs outscored their opponents 17-12 in the final frame, going 5-11 from the field, but it was not enough as the Mavericks ran away with a 73-48 win.
 
Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) tallied her second double-double of the season grabbing 12 rebounds, and draining 13 points. Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) followed up with nine points of her own, while Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) and Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) each added seven points.
 
The Mustangs hit the road again to open conference play against Texas Woman's in Denton, Tex. At 7 p.m.
