Lady Mustangs Fall in Conference Opener

Denton, Texas – Despite a strong start for the Lady Mustangs, they opened up conference play falling to the Pioneers of Texas Woman's 75-69.
 
Tough defense by the Lady Mustangs, and efficient shooting gave them a 13-9 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School) stepped up with four points, one block and one steal. Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy ) added another steal to give Western the 15-6 advantage at the end of the first. Western hit 7-11 from the field, blocked four shots and grabbed three steals going into the second quarter.
 
Quarter two remained in favor of the Mustangs as Johnson was 3-3 from the field, and Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School), 2-2. Rodriguez was hot with back-to-back threes to make her 3-3 from beyond the arc. Despite a 6-2 run by the Pioneers, Western was able to get one last layup in from Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) to lead 30-23 at the half.
 
The Lady Mustangs hit 13 of their 24 shots to go 54 percent from the field. They out-rebounded the Pioneers 18-17 in the first half. Rodriguez led all scorers with nine points, followed by Vickery with six and McFarland with five.
 
Western came out of the break a bit quiet, a 7-0 run by the Pioneers cut into the Mustang lead 46-42. Another Rodriguez steal led to a three-pointer by Sara Lopez (El Paso, Texas/Horizon High School) to keep the Mustang lead at 52-47 at the end of the third. The Pioneers started the final quarter on a 7-0 run and took their first lead of the game at 56-52. Cold shooting by the Mustangs led the Pioneers to build their lead to 71-66 with a minute left to play.
 
A last minute three by Sara Lopez (El Paso, Texas/Horizon High School) wasn't enough as the Pioneers outscored the Mustangs 28-17 in the final quarter. Sara Lopez (El Paso, Texas/Horizon High School) led Western with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Vickery sank 15 points on 7-12 shooting, while McFarland rounded out the Mustangs in double-figures with 10 points.
 
The Lady Mustangs fall to 2-3 overall (0-1 LSC) and will hit the road again next week, taking on UT- Permian Basin to continue conference play.
