Silver City, N.M. -- The Western New Mexico Mustang play host to the Tarleton State TexAnns and Angelo State Rambelles this weekend in the final matches of Lone Star Conference regular season play. The Mustangs went 1-2 last weekend dropping Friday and Saturday's matches before coming back to win in five over UT- Permian Basin on Monday.
The Mustangs enter the weekend riding high off of their 5-set win over UT-Permian Basin earlier this week, bringing them to a 6-12 conference record, and one spot behind the top-8 to make to conference tournament. Freshman,
Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) continues to shine for the Mustangs compiling 318 kills for a 3.66 average to rank second in the conference in kills per set. In terms of setting duties, the Mustangs have bounced around with a few setter this season, with
Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School),
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) and
Sophia Mitchell (Houston, TX/Katy Taylor High School) all contributing. In the match against UTPB, Campoli posted a double-double with 26 assists and 23 digs in the win.
Tarleton State comes into the match undefeated in conference play (18-0), 26-2 overall, #10 in the recent American Volleyball Coaches Association poll and currently holds the top spot to host the South Central Regional. Leading the TexAnns is Adriana Darthuy who leads the team with 280 kills, averaging 2.89 per set. She also places second on the team with 289 digs, for a 2.98 average. Assisting in the offensive efforts in setter, Blanca Izquierdo who averages 6.11 assists per set. Izquierdo also ranks second in the conference with 38 service aces on the season.
Defensively, Adrianna Knutsen leads the TexAnns with 436 digs for a 4.49 average. Middle blocker, Hannah McManus is a wall for the TexAnns, leading the conference in blocks, and ranks fourth in the nation with a 1.40 block average.
Angelo State enters this weekend 21-7 overall, 14-4 in conference play. Audrey Fragniere leads the Rambelles with 2.85 kills per set, follow by Sundara Chinn who not only contributes 2.37 kills per set, but also leads the team with 315 digs for a 3.18 average. Setter Meghan Parker has surpassed the 1,000 assist mark, in this season alone. She also scores behind the service line racking up 48 service aces, enough to lead the conference.
