Volleyball Dominates in Straight-Set Victory

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Western NM defeated Southeastern Okla. 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20) on Friday. Western NM hit .338 with 36 kills and nine total blocks, while Southeastern Okla. finished at .046 with 26 kills.

Western NM took control of the first set with a 7-of-8 stretch that moved the score from 13-9 to 20-10, including an Isabella Brewer kill and a Jade Rampton (Nelson, New Zealand/Shanghai American School) block. Earlier, Daphne Posthumus (Lelystad, Netherlands/CCNV Harderwijk (Netherlands)) had two early kills and Brynlee Barris added a kill and was credited on two blocks as Western NM built leads of 7-2 and 13-5. Mikelle McAfee (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School.) served back-to-back aces for 23-12 and 24-12, and Hannah Haggard (Tucson, AZ/Tanque Verde High School) closed the set with a kill from Sailor Allred (Silver City, NM/Wiesbaden HS (Germany)) for a 25-15 Western NM win.

A seven-point run put Western NM in control of the second set, moving from an 11-10 lead to 18-10. Savanna Haefs (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista High School) served six straight points during that stretch, while Jayden Hughes (High Rolls, NM/Cloudcroft High School), Barris and Hailey Meeks contributed kills and Barris was involved in two blocks. Brewer later added a kill and an ace as Western NM finished the set 25-16.

In the third set, Western NM closed out a 25-20 win, getting a Posthumus kill from Haggard after Southeastern Okla. scored twice to move from 24-18 to 24-20. Posthumus had eight kills in the set, including Western NM's first two points and the final point. Western NM widened its advantage on Jayla McDuffie's service turn, moving from 17-13 to 20-13 on a Southeastern Okla. setting error, a Brewer kill, and McDuffie's ace.

Posthumus led Western NM with 11 kills while hitting .563 and added a solo block. Barris posted 8 kills, a team-high 13 points, and five total blocks, including three solo blocks. Brewer finished with 7 kills on 8 attacks for a .750 hitting percentage and added a service ace. Haggard recorded a team-high 11 assists and 7 digs.

Western NM is 2-3 overall.
