Softball Claims First LSC Win Against Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Having come close several times this season, the Western New Mexico University softball team was finally able to get over the hump as a big sixth inning, along with a strong relief performance by redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) helped propel the Lady Mustangs to their first Lone Star Conference victory 7-5 against Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday night.

WNMU (2-44, 1-27 LSC) looked to be in trouble trailing by two with two innings to play when the offense exploded. With two outs in the sixth, junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) helped start the scoring spurt as she singled in senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) to cut the deficit to one. Senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) took a 1-0 pitch to left-center to score sophomore Bailey McFarland (El Paso, TX/JM Hanks ) and tie the game at five. The hot hitting continued as sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) ripped a 2-1 pitch to left field to bring home both Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Garcia to push WNMU to the 7-5 lead.

That was all that Shone needed, as she worked around a hit-by-pitch in the sixth and then got Texas A&M-Kingsville (25-24, 12-14 LSC) 1-2-3 in the seventh to secure the win.

The Lady Mustangs took advantage of three walks in the first inning to build a 2-0 lead. Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) opened the game with a four-pitch walk and after junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin) singled, Garcia walked to load the bases. Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center and after Maldonado walked, sophomore Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) drilled a 2-2 pitch to right-center for an RBI single and 2-0 lead.

After the Javelinas answered with a run in the home half, Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) moved the WNMU lead back to two with an RBI single to right for the 3-1 lead. Again, the lead didn't last long as Rachael Longoria hit a three-run homer in the home half to push Texas A&M-Kingsville to a 4-3 lead after two. Shone came on in relief in the inning and worked around a bases loaded jam to kept the deficit at one.

Another run crossed on a home run in the fourth to move the lead to 5-3 for the Javelinas setting the stage for the big rally in the sixth inning.

WNMU outhit Texas A&M-Kingsville 13-10, as eight Lady Mustangs had at least a hit and Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) went 3-3 with three RBI. Longoria, Randa Hatter and Lauren Oatman all had two hit games for the Javelinas.

In the circle, Shone tossed 5.2 innings in relief to contain the Javelina bats limiting them to just one earned run, along with three strikeouts for her first win (1-17) of the season and 35th career victory. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) went the first 1.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. Breanna Smith started for the Javelinas and went a third of an inning before being replaced by Sarah Gilbert. Gilbert gave up five earned runs in 5.1 innings to take the loss (7-4).

The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday) starting at 12 p.m. Central Time.
