Softball Concludes Season at Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville responded Saturday as the Western New Mexico University softball team had a tough time solving Carlie Clark in the first game and the Javelina offense was strong in both games as the Lady Mustangs fell in game one 10-0 and 13-2 in game two with both games going five innings in Lone Star Conference action.

Clark limited WNMU (2-46, 1-29 LSC) to just one hit in the first game, but the Lady Mustangs had chances despite the low hit total. In the first, senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), who always seems to find her way on via a hit-by-pitch at some point during a series, did so to start the game as she was hit on a 2-0 pitch. Junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin) then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but no one made a play on it to put runners at first and second. Clark recovered to get a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to leave the runners stranded.

Texas A&M-Kingsville (27-24, 14-14 LSC) exploded on offense in the home half as they took advantage of four errors, coupled with four hits of their own to plate five runs.

Two more runs crossed on three hits in the second for a 7-0 lead after two. WNMU got two on in the third with junior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) walking and Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) getting hit-by-pitch for the second straight at-bat. Both moved up on a passed ball, but Clark locked down again just like in the first inning as she got a ground out, strikeout and pop out to retire the side.

The Javelinas closed the scoring with three runs in the home half for a 10-0 lead after three. Gutierrez got the last hit for WNMU with a double in the fifth, which turned out to be the only hit in the game for the Lady Mustangs. She was left stranded and Texas A&M-Kingsville took the 10-0 victory in five innings.

Texas A&M-Kingsville held an 8-1 edge on hits with Rachael Longoria tallying two hits for the Javelinas and Roxy Chapa driving in three.

In the circle, freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) went the first two innings for the Lady Mustangs and took the loss (1-17) as she allowed five earned runs. Freshman Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) went the final two innings and allowed three earned runs. Clark went all five innings to get the win (4-7) for the Javelinas as she allowed just the one hit and added eight strikeouts.

Clark also started game two and WNMU was ready right out of the gate. Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) started the frame reaching on an error. Luna then singled to pitcher and after a fielder's choice out moved runners to the corners, senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) hit a sacrifice fly to left for the early lead. Sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) brought in the second run of the inning as on her single to center, a fielding error brought home junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) for a 2-0 lead.

Redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) kept Texas A&M-Kingsville in check until the third inning when the Javelinas broke through in a big way scoring 10 runs on 10 hits to take a 10-2 lead.

WNMU tried to answer right back in the fourth with redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro), sophomore Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) and Gutierrez all singling to load the bases. Clark then got an infield fly pop out and strikeout to leave the bases loaded.

Texas A&M-Kingsville posted the final three runs of the game in the fourth to open a 13-2 lead. Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled in the second, but that would be the final baserunner as the Javelinas claimed the 13-2 win in five innings.

The Javelinas outhit WNMU 16-8 with Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Gutierrez tallying two hits apiece. Longoria tallied a 3-3 game batting leadoff for Texas A&M-Kingsville, while Lauren Oatman and Longoria drove in three runs apiece.

In the circle, Shone went the first two innings and ended up with the loss (1-18) as she allowed 10 earned runs. Waddell went the final two innings and gave up just three earned runs. Clark went the first four innings for the Javelinas to get her second win (5-7) of the day giving up two unearned runs. Randa Hatter went the final inning.

The wins helped keep Texas A&M-Kingsville alive for a possible LSC Tournament spot, as they are just a half-game back of Texas A&M-Commerce for the sixth and final tournament spot. The Lions will face Texas Woman's tomorrow and a loss would leave the teams tied for the final spot. The Javelinas own the tiebreaker and would claim the final spot.

It was the final game as Lady Mustangs for seniors Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite).
